Two young men in their early 30's were determined to OWN a bank. They were not satisfied with becoming Executive Directors.
This is the story of Access Bank.
Aig-Imoukhuede pitched the idea of owning a bank to Herbert Wigwe in 2000. They both worked together at GT Bank as Executive Directors. Herbert was in charge of managing the entire portfolio of corporate clients. While Aig worked in various areas including treasury, financial control, and strategy.
After one year, Herbert attended a three month senior management program sponsored by GT Bank.
When he came back, he agreed to embark on the journey with Aig.
Then they started hunting for banks to buy. They tagged it "Project Festival" by a team of advisers coordinated by Albert Okumagba of BGL Securities.
They finally arrived at Access Bank. The bank was trying to raise N1b through public offer at the time. But they had N200m. They aggressively raised N800m through loans and paid the N1b.
When their bosses at GTB, Fola and Tayo learned they have bought the bank, they felt betrayed and asked Aig and Herbet to resign.
After the resignation, they fully focused on running Access Bank with Aig as CEO and Herbert as his deputy.
