The supplier pays VAT to HMRC.
Then he sells to you and pays VAT to HMRC on this sale. So - he charges you VAT. That is the way this works and VAT is paid once - by you.
That is the system.

If the government gives you £400 and you pay it to energy company, neither you nor the government are really a part of this transaction.

It is £400 of taxpayers money going to energy company.
And - as it is financed by debt - we will all pay for it.

I am an optimist, so for years I believed that with some effort UK was fixable.
But sometimes a country gets into a state when only external intervention or a revolution can save it.
Neither is painless.
Neither is likely here.

I know it is obvious, but I think it is still worth spelling out...
The electorate who will decide on next PM seems to prefer the "continuity" candidate.

In other words - they feel that all is going rather well.
