Ray was one of a kind. An iconic dual-code player & the voice of rugby league. He was a funny, generous and thoroughly decent man. He helped me out on many occasions, as he did so many other people. He really was a great person & will be greatly missed. A true legend
Some sad news to bring you.
Rugby league great Ray French, who commentated on the sport for the BBC over four decades, has died at the age of 85.
Our thoughts, from everybody at BBC Sport, are with all his family and friends.
After Paul Burke's glittering boxing career he became a familiar face around the city delivering fitness sessions and training the next generation of boxers.
Tributes are being paid after his death this week, aged 59.

8 years ago today, I was the closest survivor of the Manchester Arena bombing. I didn’t know if I’d make it — but I did.
In 2017, my mates attended the Europa League final against Ajax not knowing if I would survive. They carried my spirit with them.
Today, 8 years on, we’re together in Bilbao for another European final. I’m here, I’m standing, I’m smiling — and I’m living proof that love, resilience, and unity can overcome the darkest of days.
This isn’t just about football. It’s about fighting back. It’s about friendship, survival, and never giving up.
Let’s do this for Manchester. Let’s do this for every survivor. Let’s do this for those we lost.

Totally agree. Lots of clubs talk about inclusion & then don't walk the walk. The players & staff must be devastated. Leaves a very bad taste for me.
