Track & field is one of the last places in a school where the football captain, the valedictorian, the band kid, the wrestler, and the quiet kid who never thought he belonged can all wear the same jersey.
Track does not care what a kid’s last name is, how much money he has, what side of town he lives on, or how popular he is. Out here, none of that matters. Somewhere between the workouts, the bus rides, and the meets, kids who might never have spoken to each other start to build real respect.
It is hard not to respect somebody when you have seen what they are willing to push through and how much they are willing to give.
That is a big reason track & field will always mean more to me than just times, marks, and points.
14 years ago today…the greatest baseball game I’ve ever seen.
Watching the game swing back and forth, seeing the champagne being wheeled toward the Rangers’ clubhouse before the bottom of the 9th, seeing all that led to the walk off…almost hard to believe it was real.
🚨COACHES🚨
YOUR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES DO NOT NEED TO RUN EVERY MEET!
If you are having your best athlete compete in 3 events for almost 12 weeks, don’t be surprised if they break down by outdoor.
Forget winning dual meets.
Pick and choose. Race when it matters most.
The average high school coach gets paid so little that they actually lose money.
There’s a bigger cost. Time away from family and worse, they sacrifice their peace.
This won’t change. as parents, the least we can do, is let good coaches coach and just be fans of the team
There's an old African proverb:
Every morning, a gazelle wakes up knowing it must run faster than the lion, or it will die.
Every morning, a lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter if you're the lion or the gazelle.
When the sun comes up, you'd better be running.
Life doesn't reward those who sit idle. Whether you're chasing a dream or fighting to survive, motion is non-negotiable.
Stop waiting for perfect conditions. Stop waiting for permission. The sun is up. Start running.
There’s something special about distance runners. The ones that learn to respect the challenge and honor the fight become warriors….. in life. Hire them. They don’t know how to quit.
