Elle, c’est mon amie Alejandra.

À 12 ans, elle débarque au Québec et sa famille s’installe dans un 3 et demie à Montréal-Nord, sans parler un mot de français. 25 ans plus tard, elle siège à l’Assemblée nationale comme députée indépendantiste de Verdun.

C’est une femme courageuse et résiliente et son histoire est inspirante, mais elle n’est pas devenue députée du simple fruit de ses efforts. Alejandra a travaillé fort à chaque étape, j’en suis témoin depuis près de 20 ans, mais elle n’a jamais oublié que son parcours est le résultat d’un Québec qui a choisi la solidarité.

Si sa mère a survécu, c’est grâce au système de santé public et gratuit.
Si sa famille a conservé son logement, c’est grâce à l’aide sociale.
Si elle a appris le français, c’est grâce à l’école publique.
Si elle avait le ventre plein, c’est parce que sa polyvalente offrait des dîners gratuits.
Si elle a fait un doctorat, c’est parce que les frais de scolarité sont plus bas au Québec qu’ailleurs.

Si Alejandra est devenue députée, ce n’est pas seulement parce que la nation québécoise est « accueillante », c’est parce que les Québécois et les Québécoises ont tissé un filet social qui soutient TOUT LE MONDE, qu’on soit né à Lima ou à Matane, qu’on grandisse à Westmount ou à Montréal-Nord. L’histoire d’Alejandra, c’est l’histoire d’une nation qui a choisi un projet de société qui donne des chances à TOUT LE MONDE : un système de santé gratuit, une école publique forte, la meilleure redistribution de la richesse en Amérique, des travailleurs et travailleuses qui ont des droits. C’est l’histoire d’un Québec qui a construit des institutions de solidarité plutôt que de s’emmurer dans l’individualisme.

Il y a en ce moment des milliers d’Alejandra dans nos écoles, et il y a de plus en plus de politiciens qui menacent de déchirer le filet qui les retient de tomber. Si Alejandra raconte son histoire dans le Journal de Montréal ce matin, c’est pour nous inviter à ne pas les laisser faire.

Au Québec, la solidarité est le terreau de l’appartenance. Alejandra en est la preuve vivante. Partagez son histoire.
