Animal life on Earth has been annihilated by roughly 70% in the last 50 years.

We are living through one of the largest biological declines in human history, and it is happening largely out of sight.

One human generation.

Vertebrate populations including mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles have fallen by around 70% on average. Rivers have been emptied of life. Forests have been fragmented. Oceans have been depleted. In some tropical and freshwater ecosystems, wildlife losses exceed 90%.

This wasn’t inevitable. Industrial agriculture, deforestation, overfishing, pollution, and an economic model obsessed with perpetual growth have consumed ecosystems at a pace nature cannot match.

The collapse of wildlife is already happening, and every year of delay makes recovery harder, more expensive, and in some cases impossible.

It’s high time we protect what remains before the silence becomes permanent.

Spent 2 hours in a small public park in Barcelona. The adults/parents were eating and drinking (in a covered area before you mention the weather!) while the kids were running around a well kept pond and playing on a basketball court and football pitch. Dozens of kids.

The social value generated by an ordinary space like this, over decades, is incalculable: social capital, better physical and mental health, biodiversity.

With the occasional exception we don’t have this stuff in PFI-Serco-Capita Britain. Because of our model, dominant since around 1980, this would either be an empty landbanked shi*thole, or ‘student’ flats.

We can do a lot better. Part of getting there is that the left needs to stop talking just about redistribution and more about how value is created - which includes *infrastructure* like this.

Maximising broader social and economic value for a space like this - over a century - is a very different proposition to flogging everything to a highest bidder at any given moment.

Good news! After decades of ignoring rampant environmental crime on the Roding, @EnvAgency has finally decided to act.

Bad news! It’s not against Thames Water for illegally dumping billions of litres of sewage in the Roding, or the waste criminals who have dumped thousands of tonnes of rubbish on its banks, but against myself & a small volunteer charity for… restoring a river without a permit!

Within a week of the magnificent work of River Roding Trust volunteers completing the arduous work of restoring 250 metres of the Aldersbrook this winter, EA investigators had been down to the site and rattled off a letter threatening us with prosecution for doing the work without a permit. This is despite the fact that the Trust have repeatedly asked the EA to do this vital work on the Aldersbrook themselves & they have refused. It is also despite the fact that they have not investigated the huge illegal sewage outlet on the Cranbrook a few hundred metres away, which illegally discharges 750,000,000 litres of raw sewage straight into the River Roding every year.
