OPP Warn of New Cell Phone Upgrade Scam

#EssexCtyOPP are warning the public of a new scam being reported across the province targeting individuals through fraudulent cell phone upgrade offers.

In this scam, fraudsters pose as representatives of legitimate telecommunications companies, (Rogers, Bell, Telus, etc). They contact victims and say they are eligible for a free or low-cost upgrade to their cell phone. To process the offer, the fraudster requests personal information, which the victim provides believing the offer is legitimate.

After the victim receives a new cell phone, the fraudster contacts them again, claiming the incorrect device was shipped by mistake. The victim is then instructed to return the phone using shipping information provided by the fraudster. Victims then send the phone to the fraudster, while believing they are returning the device to the telecommunications company.

As a result, the victim may be left responsible for the cost of the device, associated service charges, or additional fraudulent activity on their account.

How to Protect Yourself:
-Be cautious of unsolicited calls, emails, or text messages offering free or heavily discounted device upgrades.
-Never provide personal or account information unless you have independently verified the identity of the caller.
-If you receive an unexpected upgrade offer, hang up and contact your telecommunications provider directly using the phone number listed on your bill or the company's official website.
-If you receive a device you did not request or are asked to return a device, confirm the request directly with your service provider before taking any action.
-Monitor your telecommunications and financial accounts for any unauthorized activity.

Anyone who believes they have been the victim of this scam should report the incident to their local police service and the @canantifraud.

If personal or financial information has been compromised, contact your telecommunications provider and financial institution immediately to secure your accounts.

OPP encourage the public to share this information with family members and friends, particularly seniors and other individuals who may be targeted by fraudsters. #fightfraud

La Police provinciale de l'Ontario met en garde contre une nouvelle arnaque liée au renouvellement de forfait de téléphonie mobile

#EssexCtyOPP met le public en garde contre une nouvelle arnaque signalée dans toute la province, qui cible des particuliers par le biais d'offres frauduleuses de renouvellement de forfait de téléphonie mobile.

Dans le cadre de cette arnaque, les fraudeurs se font passer pour des représentants d’opérateurs de télécommunications légitimes (Rogers, Bell, Telus, etc.). Ils contactent les victimes et leur indiquent qu’elles peuvent bénéficier d’un renouvellement de leur téléphone portable gratuit ou à moindre coût. Pour donner suite à l’offre, le fraudeur demande des informations personnelles, que la victime lui fournit en croyant que l’offre est légitime.

Une fois que la victime a reçu un nouveau téléphone portable, le fraudeur la recontacte en prétendant qu’un appareil erroné a été expédié par erreur. La victime reçoit alors pour instruction de renvoyer le téléphone en utilisant les informations d’expédition fournies par le fraudeur. Les victimes envoient alors le téléphone au fraudeur, tout en croyant qu’elles le renvoient à l’opérateur de télécommunications.

En conséquence, la victime peut se retrouver redevable du coût de l’appareil, des frais de service associés ou d’autres activités frauduleuses sur son compte.

Comment vous protéger :
- Méfiez-vous des appels, e-mails ou SMS non sollicités proposant des mises à niveau d’appareils gratuites ou à prix très réduit.
- Ne communiquez jamais d’informations personnelles ou relatives à votre compte sans avoir vérifié de manière indépendante l’identité de votre interlocuteur.
- Si vous recevez une offre de mise à niveau inattendue, raccrochez et contactez directement votre opérateur de télécommunications en utilisant le numéro de téléphone figurant sur votre facture ou sur le site web officiel de l’entreprise.
