@LucyRichAgent In 2021 I had to cast 160 roles in two months. Even if 7 agents submit 2 candidates per role, that’s 2,240 candidates.This is the reality from the casting directors side.

@LucyRichAgent But since people in this industry don’t know all the tools out there, and tend to avoid the technology that could reduce 10 days of work into one— here we are, still weeding out through headshots and CVs.
The responsibility is actually a shared one, across the entire industry.

@LucyRichAgent But we now have technology to be able to go through videos of performers quickly (provided the performers are smart with respect to what to put in the videos). We can now make intelligent weed out decisions.

@LucyRichAgent So not necessarily the discrimination it looks like from the outside, but simply because there has to be a weed out in order to make the live casting realistically manageable. And when there is no reason to cut someone on paper— there has to be one made up.

@LucyRichAgent So there are situations where you simply do not know which CV to cut and which to audition. So casting directors try to find anything— ANYTHING AT ALL— to help with the decision. And sometimes that leads to wild, far-fetched reasoning to come up with an excuse to cut someone.

@LucyRichAgent So at some point the only way to get those numbers down to a manageable level was to weed out with a photo and CV.

But CVs tell you absolutely nothing about a performer’s talent or skill. Zero. The CV weed out is only slightly more accurate than flipping a coin.

@LucyRichAgent Already the fact that the first weed out, in 2023, with the technology that we have today, is still through a photo and a CV, puts part of that responsibility on all of us.
