I now have a fairly good idea of where next-generation smartphone operating systems are heading.

Some companies are embracing Apple’s Liquid Glass concept. Others are developing their own glass-inspired designs with better visibility, stronger visual hierarchy, and more practical interaction. Their approaches and aesthetics may differ, but they all have one thing in common: everyone is moving forward, trying to create a visual and interactive language for the next generation of mobile OS design.

Except Samsung.

So far, I can see almost no sign of meaningful change in One UI.

In the smartphone industry of 2026, Samsung has become a strangely unique presence. It is still relying on relatively dated design concepts, interaction patterns, and animation systems. While other companies are exploring next-generation visual languages, materials, spatial hierarchy, motion, and system-wide consistency, One UI increasingly feels like a primitive tribe living in the middle of modern civilization.

I know some people will say:

“Samsung isn’t copying Apple’s Liquid Glass. That’s a good thing!”

I completely disagree with that logic.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with refusing to follow Apple. Samsung can reject Liquid Glass. It can stick to its own aesthetic direction. It can even create a design language completely different from Apple’s.

But there is one requirement:

You need to show us your own next-generation design.

And that is exactly where the problem lies.

In my view, One UI 9.0 is fundamentally not that different from One UI 7.0 in terms of its overall design philosophy. There has been no real generational evolution in its visual language. The animation system has not evolved significantly. Many core interactions still feel rooted in the past.

The version number keeps increasing, yet there are fewer and fewer things that actually make users feel, “Yes, this is a new generation of One UI.”

Samsung’s update cycle has even started to feel strangely repetitive:

One UI X.0 introduces some new features along with a bunch of bugs. Then One UI X.5 fixes those bugs, and Samsung presents it as if a huge amount of optimization has been accomplished.

Fixing problems is obviously important. But when fixing problems you created yourself becomes a major part of what counts as “progress,” it is easy to fall into a cycle of self-congratulation.

That is why I am currently pessimistic about One UI 9.5 delivering any truly major design evolution.

If you think I am judging it too early, then just wait.

Wait until Xiaomi HyperOS 4, OPPO ColorOS 17, vivo OriginOS 7, HONOR MagicOS 11, and Huawei HarmonyOS 7 are all released.

Then put them next to One UI 9 and compare them.

At that point, the gap may become painfully obvious.

And I think Samsung’s real problem goes far beyond whether it uses glass effects or whether one particular visual element looks outdated. The deeper issue is that One UI’s understanding of what a modern smartphone OS should look and feel like is gradually falling behind the rest of the industry.

Visual language, animations, interactions, visual continuity, and system-wide consistency all contribute to whether an operating system feels contemporary.

And One UI is increasingly losing that sense of modernity.

Samsung does not have to follow Apple. It does not have to embrace Liquid Glass.

But Samsung needs to answer one simple question:

Where is One UI’s own next-generation design?

If One UI 9.5 still cannot provide an answer, then once this new wave of Chinese smartphone operating systems arrives, the debate may no longer be about different aesthetic preferences.

It may come down to a much harsher conclusion:

One UI could genuinely be one to two years behind modern smartphone OS design.
