Lo que más me sorprende de Portugal no es que no haya ganado un Mundial teniendo generaciones tan talentosas. Lo que me sorprende es la incapacidad que han demostrado para aprovechar al máximo a la mayor leyenda de su historia.

Mientras Argentina entendió que tener a Messi era una ventaja competitiva y construyó un equipo alrededor de él, Portugal parece empeñada en tratar a Cristiano Ronaldo como si fuera un jugador más. Y no lo es.

Te puede gustar más o menos Cristiano, pero negar lo que representa para Portugal es absurdo. Antes de él, Portugal era una selección respetada; después de él, se convirtió en una marca global. Millones de personas conocieron el fútbol portugués gracias a Ronaldo.

Las grandes selecciones entienden que las leyendas no se rebajan para encajar en el grupo, el grupo se eleva para aprovechar a las leyendas.
