June is National Internet Safety Month. In developed countries, about 96% of children (ages 3 - 18) access the internet daily. Global connectivity is lower with an estimated 33% of youth having home internet access worldwide. The internet is accessible to a growing number of younger children in their homes. This provides a false sense of security. Parents need to be vigilant about protecting their children from exploitation.
The internet poses significant risks to children in four main areas: contact with predators, exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying/harassment and privacy vulnerabilities from online commerce. It is more critical than ever to protect children from online grooming, sextortion and stranger danger as children interact with strangers posing as peers in online games, live-streaming apps and chat rooms.

An app developed by a Saint Louis University researcher helps stop human trafficking. The free mobile app allows people to take a photo of a hotel room when they travel. Abusers and traffickers regularly post photos of their victims posed in hotel rooms in online ads. These photos can be used to find and prosecute the criminals. The app, TraffikCam, launched in 2016, helps investigators determine where the photos were taken.

@AndrewGold_ok@AnnekeLucas January is Human Trafficking Prevention month. Thank you for raising awareness about this global crime. https://t.co/9NvFEFSfGh
Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
Human trafficking is a horrific crime and a form of modern slavery that affects millions of people of all ages and backgrounds, in almost every country worldwide. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. In a worsening trend, children made up 38% of trafficking victims detected globally in 2022. Findings show girls are mostly trafficked for sexual exploitation, while boys are trafficked for forced labor, criminality or begging.
Awareness is a critical first step toward prevention and helping victims find safety. Traffickers rely on silence and the public looking the other way. By staying informed, recognizing the signs, and supporting organizations that help victims, we can all play a role in protecting human dignity and ending this exploitation. On this day, let us renew our commitment for a future where every child is safe and free.
RTBF has identified eight sex trafficked girls and five trafficked boys in need of rescue. Please make a tax-deductible donation of any size to help end the exploitation of these innocent victims. Thank you!
