In 2019, an anonymous user on 4chan’s paranormal board posted an eerie photo of an empty yellow room with damp-looking carpet and buzzing fluorescent lights.
The second image you see is the original Backrooms photo.
A commenter added the now-legendary caption: “If you’re not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you’ll end up in the Backrooms."
Kane Parsons, director of Backrooms, was just 15 or 16 at the time when he first came across the image and saved it on his computer.
Parsons rediscovered the image in late 2021 while between projects and decided to recreate the unsettling space in 3D using Blender.
Then, he combined it with Adobe After Effects to create a found-footage short and uploaded “The Backrooms (Found Footage)” on January 7, 2022, on YouTube, which exploded in popularity.
What started as one creepy image and a single caption became a full-blown cinematic phenomenon thanks to Parsons’ sharp creative vision and ingenuity.
