Why do bears sit blankly on the side of the road?

Many reports suggest that people have observed bears in the wild exhibiting unusual behavior, such as standing or sitting motionless for extended periods in specific locations. These bears seem to do nothing except gaze at beautiful landscapes like paintings of sunsets, bodies of water, and mountains. There are few explanations as to why bears display such behavior, apart from the hypothesis that they simply find such scenes aesthetically pleasing and want to admire them.

Bears are known as fierce animals with immense strength from their giant claws. However, their appeal to humans is still significant. In fact, they even appear frequently on popular television shows. In the 1990s, a Canadian couple, Maureen Enns and Charles Russell, moved to Lake Kambalnoye on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia - a mostly uninhabited and wild area, to prove that humans can peacefully coexist with bears, one of the most feared and misunderstood creatures in the world.

They adopted three orphaned wild brown bears, but they did not raise them as pets. Instead, they taught them how to survive in the wild. In 1996, Maureen began to suspect that the bears were digging multiple dens in places where they could admire beautiful scenery, indicating that they also have a sensitivity to aesthetics. The following season, these bears often led her to locations where they had dug dens, and she believed her hypothesis was correct.

Despite bears appearing everywhere in the world, they are absent in Africa. At one point, experts on this continent classified a bear species within the local biological organization, known as the Atlas bear. The Atlas bear primarily lived in North Africa, especially in the Atlas Mountains. However, no one has seen this species, and it is believed that the last bears were killed in the 1870s.

"Within a week of our arrival in Kambalnoe with the bear cubs, I found them frequently curled up in dens and could observe them sitting calmly to gaze at the lake. We also discovered that in places with more beautiful scenery, they would dig more dens," she wrote.

Was Maureen's hypothesis correct? Do bears really have a sense of beauty? Although we do not have any scientific evidence, one thing we can be certain of is that bears are very intelligent. While their brains are hard to understand, their size and complexity suggest bears are more intelligent than previously thought.

Although not all bears exhibit the same behaviors, particularly in regard to subjective matters like beauty, it is interesting that some of them actually seek out and appreciate beautiful scenes.

Located in southeastern Alaska, near the city of Juneau, Admiralty Island is a remote island with an incredibly diverse ecosystem, covering over 4,100 square kilometers. This seems like a paradise for those who want to explore new lands or camp here. However, before doing so, consider the following information. Admiralty Island is also known as the home of North American brown bears, with a population density of about 1 bear per square kilometer. If you truly want to explore the forests here, it is best to go with an experienced guide.

The brown bear is the most common bear species in the world, found throughout Europe, North America, northern Africa, and Asia. Currently, the brown bear's habitat has been shrinking, but it is still considered a species that is less threatened by extinction. An estimated 200,000 brown bears exist.

The Grolar (or Pizzly) bear - a hybrid between a brown bear and a polar bear. Brown bears and polar bears typically avoid each other. Therefore, it is rare to see them mating. However, when the weather changes, they are spotted wandering in close proximity. This resulted in the creation of hybrids between the two species known as Grolar or Pizzly bears. These are the first naturally occurring hybrid bears found, as previous hybrid species only existed in zoos.

While most people do not hunt bears for meat, bear meat consumption has occurred in the past worldwide. In 2010, a rare incident took place in Azerbaijan, where Anar Mammadov, after becoming intoxicated, ordered a restaurant to slaughter and roast bear meat for him and his friends to eat. As Anar was the son of a high-ranking official, the restaurant staff could not refuse, but they charged a hefty price of $1 million for this special dish.
