This is the same dynamic we’re seeing between ISWAP and the Nigerian military. We need to move beyond tactical victories and pursue a strategic victory. If not we will be stuck in a forever war.

The ISWAP attack on the military camp in Gajiram is a testament to this. ISWAP has a media apparatus to document and amplify such operations. Months of successful Nigerian military operations, mass surrenders and rescue missions can quickly fade from the narrative if the group manages to pull off even one high profile operation. All they need is one lucky strike, and they have the media machinery to exploit it.

This is why the Nigerian Navy needs to be part of a strategic campaign to defeat ISWAP in its Lake Chad stronghold. ISWAP relies heavily on speedboats and other motorized craft for mobility and resupply across the waterways. The Navy must help deny them that freedom of movement and disrupt the maritime supply network that sustains their operations.
