It was narrated from Ali bn Abi Talib رضى الله عنه that whenever the time for prayer came, his limbs would tremble and his colour would change.

He was asked about this, and he replied:

Ibn al-Qayyim beautifully described the state of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah during his imprisonment, saying:

“He once said to me:

‘The true prisoner is the one whose heart is imprisoned from his Lord, and the true captive is the one enslaved by his own desires.’

“And when he was led into the citadel and entered within its walls, he gazed upon them and recited:

‘So a wall will be put up between them, with a gate, inside it is mercy, but outside it is torment.’ (Quran 57:13)
