Sid Vicious backstage at the Palladium in New York City on November 12, 1978, with Richard Hell on the left and Johnny Thunders in the middle. They were there for a night that featured Blondie and Johnny's band, the Heartbreakers.
Three very different punk stories met in that room. Richard Hell played in Neon Boys and Television, co-founded the Heartbreakers, and then led Richard Hell and the Voidoids, whose 1977 album Blank Generation influenced a generation of punk bands. Johnny Thunders came to fame with the New York Dolls, left in 1975 along with drummer Jerry Nolan, and the Heartbreakers released their only official studio album, L.A.M.F., in 1977.
Sid played his last Sex Pistols concert at Winterland in San Francisco in January 1978 and later settled in New York, playing shows at Max's Kansas City with a band that included Jerry Nolan and Arthur Kane. This photo comes from a very hard chapter in his life, a month after Nancy Spungen's death at the Hotel Chelsea. Sid died on February 2, 1979, at just 21. Johnny Thunders died in New Orleans in 1991 at 38.
🎸 Johnny Thunders sometimes joined Sid on stage at Max's Kansas City in 1978. Did you ever get to see any of these three play live? 🎸
