Where she got it wrong is saying the influencers are bored and hungry. They are not necessarily going through anything, they just channel their creativity into controversy because that's what sells here.
On Instagram and TikTok, everything goes and anything goes viral. But here, you need to go a little beyond normal especially if you thrive on attention and you constantly need it. So most of these things people do here are just their strategy.
For instance, why would a lady film herself eating eight wraps of bulky fufu? It's attention economy at work. What it has done is forced people to be controlled by the algorithm and not them controlling the algorithm. It is the commercialization of Idiocy and it honestly pays because in the end, I can't pay your bills. So if idiocy pays it, why not? It's a rational choice
We grew up watching people like Sanyeri, Okele and many others. Most of them were not educated either, yet nobody had a problem watching and supporting them.
But because it is Peller, a young guy doing well for himself, suddenly everyone has an issue. The funny thing is that this same guy has helped many people, paid rents, paid school fees and given others opportunities that changed their lives.
You do not have to like his content, but acting like someone cannot be successful because they are not educated makes no sense. If his content is not for you, simply move on and let those who enjoy it enjoy it.
As a Real Estate Consultant, I'll break down what you need to check when seeking to rent and even buy an apartment. Buckle up, it's about to be a long read.
IF IT FEELS TOLERABLE AND NOT COMFORTABLE, WALK AWAY!!!
1. Access & Location Reality
Don’t rely on Google Maps impression, test it physically.
Road condition leading to the house (flooding, laterite, potholes)
Travel time during peak hours (morning + evening)
Security presence on the street (gates, guards, patrols)
Noise level (generator noise, traffic, nearby bars/markets)
Flood risk signs (water marks on walls, raised floors, nearby drainage flow)
2. Electricity Situation (Very Important in Lagos)
Is there prepaid or postpaid meter or estimated billing?
How often is public power supplied realistically?
Generator availability (shared or individual?)
Generator condition + fuel responsibility (tenant or landlord?)
Wiring quality (no exposed or hanging wires)
Changeover switch working properly?
3. Water Supply & Plumbing
Turn on taps, check pressure and clarity
Flush all toilets (weak flush = future problem)
Ask source of water: borehole, tanker, or public supply
Check for:
rusty water
bad smell
slow drainage in bathroom/kitchen
Look under sinks for leakage or temporary pipe fixes
4. Walls, Roof & Structural Condition
Cracks (especially diagonal or wide ones)
Damp patches / peeling paint (hidden leakage)
Ceiling condition (water stains = roof issues)
Flooring (hollow sound or uneven tiles)
Doors/windows alignment (sign of settlement issues)
5. Security & Building Access
Main gate strength and locking system
Presence of security guard (24/7 or part-time?)
Number of entry/exit points
Visitor control system (if any)
Balcony/window security (especially ground/1st floors)
6.Drainage & Flood Control
This is critical in many parts of Lagos.
Check compound drainage channels
Ask: “Does water stay here after rain?”
Look for mud marks or erosion paths
Inspect bathroom/kitchen floor drainage speed
7. Neighbourhood Behaviour
Visit at night if possible
Observe generator noise patterns
Check density (overcrowded compounds = future stress)
Ask tenants about landlord responsiveness
8. Legal & Financial Clarity
Before paying anything:
Who is the real landlord/agent?
Confirm agency fee, caution fee, legal fee breakdown
Ask for receipt + written agreement
Check duration of lease and renewal terms
Any hidden charges (security, waste, diesel contribution)
9. Comfort Test (Final Personal Check)
Stand in the apartment and ask:
“Can I sleep here with this noise?”
“Can I live here during a blackout week?”
“Does this space feel manageable daily?”
