For three years the father of my two sons, and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been brutally penalised by his political opponents, in a personal vendetta by Army Chief, Asim Munir,  which according to the UN,  amounts to torture and which  is now taking a potentially fatal toll on his physical and mental health. 

He has endured 3 years of solitary confinement. For nearly ten months now his family has been denied contact with him. He has been deprived of the most basic human contact, denied access to books, lawyers and doctors.

The international human-rights standards are unequivocal. Under the UN’s Nelson Mandela Rules, solitary confinement lasting more than 15 consecutive days is prohibited and amounts to torture.

He has endured this treatment not for 15 days, but for three years.

Pakistan’s own Supreme Court has now intervened: ordering comprehensive  medical treatment, access to his personal doctor, regular family visits and twice-weekly calls with his sons.

Yet those orders are being defied.

This is no longer simply a Pakistani political matter. It is a human-rights emergency.

He has deep and lifelong ties to Britain. He studied at Oxford University, captained Oxford University cricket and spent years playing county cricket in England. His relationship with this country stretches back more than half a century. His charitable activities were internationally recognised, and  include building the only free cancer hospital in Pakistan as well as a university.

His sons, my two boys, Sulaiman and Kasim, are British citizens. They have been forced to watch their father’s health decline from thousands of miles away, prevented from visiting him, denied visas, publicly threatened by government officials with arrest themselves, and even denied court-mandated regular phone calls. 

I have repeatedly appealed to the UK government to intervene. Purported attempts at back channelling have evidently failed. The previous Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy informed me in writing that Britain would not  intervene if my sons, British citizens, are arrested when they travel to Pakistan to visit their father. 

@FCDOGovUK: Britain must now speak out publicly and unequivocally. Demand that Pakistan comply with its own Supreme Court;  restore Imran Khan’s medical access, his right to see his family, end his prolonged isolation and uphold his fundamental human rights.

Pakistan is a Commonwealth country. Britain has a long and proud tradition of standing against arbitrary detention, inhumane treatment and the denial of fundamental rights. Those principles mean very little if we invoke them only selectively and neglect them when inconvenient.
This an appeal to the new Burnham government  to please now do the right thing.

Time to rejoice.

For three years we have watched him endure isolation that would break most men. Cut off from newspapers, from books, from his family, from the country to which he gave everything. Tonight, finally, a door has opened. Prayers. Endless prayers. For his health, for his strength, for his full and complete recovery.

Those who know him, as I have for over 35 years, also know this about him: he is not vindictive. He does not carry hatred in his heart, even toward those who have wronged him. That has always been his strength, and it will be Pakistan's strength too, if we let it. This country does not need more anger. It needs peace. It needs healing. And I believe, I have to believe, that this is the first drop of that rain, of Allah's mercy.

What courage this man has shown. Three years. Isolation, illness, uncertainty, grief for his people and still, he did not bend. Emulating Tariq bin Ziyad and Salahuddin Ayubi, he did not trade his principles for comfort, persevered and endured. He did not succumb. History will remember this unique chapter, and it will remember it as a testament to what one man's conviction can withstand.

I am overwhelmed tonight. Genuinely. Words feel small next to what this moment means, to his family, to his workers, to the tens of millions who have carried him in their prayers every single day of these three years.

Get well, Imran Khan. Pakistan needs you healthy to lead us as a Captain in the field of turbulent seas of confusion and chaos.

May Allah grant you a full recovery, and may this be the beginning of justice, of real justice — finally taking its course.

اس کی وجوہات سمجھنا مشکل نہیں: ملک کی صورتحال، جیل میں مقید ساتھی، شہید ہونے والے اور ان کے سوگوار خاندان۔ خود ان کی اپنی تنہائی، نہ اخبار، نہ کتابیں، باہر کی دنیا سے مکمل بےخبری۔ اور بلاشبہ بشریٰ بی بی، اپنی بہنوں، کارکنوں اور پارٹی کے بارے میں ان کی فکرمندی۔

اب وہ بلڈ پریشر کی تین الگ الگ دوائیں لے رہے ہیں۔ اس کے لیے روزانہ صبح و شام باقاعدہ نگرانی درکار ہے تاکہ خوراک درست کی جا سکے، ہفتہ وار اندازوں پر نہیں چلا جا سکتا۔ انہیں کولیسٹرول کم کرنے والی دوا بھی دی جا رہی ہے۔ اس عمر میں بڑھا ہوا کولیسٹرول جینیاتی اور ذہنی دباؤ دونوں وجوہات سے ہو سکتا ہے، اور اسے خوراک، ورزش اور دوا کے امتزاج سے قابو کرنا ضروری ہے، جیسا کہ بلڈ پریشر کے لیے بھی۔ کم نمک۔ زیادہ حرکت۔ حقیقی نگرانی۔

۵) کارڈیک سی ٹی انجیوگرام اور، اگر ضرورت پڑے تو، دیگر ٹیسٹ۔

میں سخت پریشان ہوں۔ تنہائی ان کے جسم پر جسمانی اثرات مرتب کر رہی ہے۔ اگر اسے فوری طور پر حل نہ کیا گیا تو نقصان ناقابلِ تلافی ہو سکتا ہے۔

عمران خان کو اب فوری طور پر ہسپتال کے ماحول میمنتقل کیا جانا لازمی ہے، ایک آزاد اور غیرجانبدار طبی بورڈ کی نگرانی میں۔ ان کا خاندان اور پاکستان کے سرکاری ڈاکٹروں پر بلکل اعتماد نییں کرتے ہیں۔ سب پہلے بھی دیکھ چکے ہیں کہ رپورٹس میں ردوبدل کیا گیا، اعداد و شمار بڑھا چڑھا کر یا دبا کر پیش کیے گئے، پلیٹلیٹس کا معاملہ اس کی ایک مثال ہے۔

اگلے تین ماہ بہت اہم ہیں اور پتہ چلے گا کہ ان کی حالت بہتر ہوتی ہے یا مستقل نقصان میں بدل جاتی ہے۔
ہم سب پریشان ہیں۔
ملک کو آج ان کی ضرورتہے، پہلے سے کہیں زیادہ ہے۔
