During pregnancy, a small number of fetal cells naturally cross the placenta and enter the mother’s bloodstream. This process, known as fetal microchimerism, means that tiny clusters of the child’s cells can take up residence in the mother’s body and remain there for decades after birth. What makes this phenomenon remarkable is that many of these fetal cells behave like stem cells. They are able to migrate through the body, settle in different tissues, and—in some cases—respond to injury.

Research over the past two decades has found fetal cells embedded in healing heart tissue, in regenerating skin, in the liver after injury, and in other organs where repair is taking place. Some of these cells appear capable of transforming into the types of cells needed for healing, such as heart muscle cells, liver cells, or immune cells. Others may contribute indirectly, by releasing molecules that support tissue repair and reduce inflammation.

Their influence isn’t always fully predictable, yet their presence in healing tissues is consistently observed.
