On June 1, 1972, Godspell opened at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto.

The cast for that production was filled with unknown actors who would change comedy & entertainment forever.

This is the story of that group!

Before Godspell began its Toronto run, it was an off-Broadway hit that had been performed in Australia and England. In each place that the production was performed, it was a new group of actors cast.

An open casting call was put out in Toronto for the run in the city and a bunch of 20-something young actors decided to audition.

It was expected the production would run for six weeks. It ended up running for 60.
No one knew it at the time, but the cast would change entertainment and comedy forever.

Among the actors cast were Eugene Levy, Jayne Eastwood, Gilda Radner, Victor Garber, Howard Shore, Paul Shaffer, Martin Short and Andrea Martin.

That group of actors went on to win many Emmys, three Tony Awards, four Order of Canadas and three Academy Awards.

For Martin Short, it was the first show he did out of high school. It was also where he met his future wife Nancy Dolman.
It was Eugene Levy who introduced Martin Short to Andrea Martin there. All three went on to act in SCTV.

Levy suggested Godspell to Short after Short decided to give himself one year to try acting after graduating with a degree in social work.

Paul Shaffer was the musical director and it was his first shot in show business.

Later, Dave Thomas, also of SCTV, joined Godspell.

The show played at the Royal Alexandra Theatre until Sept. 3, 1972 when it moved to the Bayview Playhouse. The show eventually closed on Aug. 12, 1973 after 488 performances. That was a record number of performances for Toronto at the time.
