@urbanprehisto @archaeostef @HuwDWilliams But the good news is that the condition of the chambered cairns themselves, and their 20th C cappings are both regularly monitored. Interesting to think that the domes are almost antiques in their own right! The archaeology of conservation...

The sky-lit roofs do create the environmental conditions that enable the photosynthetic algae to colonise (by contrast, see Cuween), but personally I'd say that's the lesser of two evils if the alternative is a thrashing from the Orcadian elements!

@archaeostef @urbanprehisto @HuwDWilliams Sorry, missed this... An interesting roof in its own right 🤓!! Installed in 1938 after the perceived success of the concrete dome at Taversoe Tuick, but prior to that there were plans for a free-standing coverhouse like the hangar at Midhowe. It could have looked VERY different!
