A hero of 2018, 2024 and 2026 is no more.

R. Rajesh of Kalliyoor, Thiruvananthapuram, was a rescue volunteer and rappelling instructor who answered the call of duty whenever Keralam needed him.

He stepped forward during the 2018 floods. He was among the rescuers during the Wayanad landslide tragedy in 2024. And in 2026, he made the ultimate sacrifice.

After giving his own life jacket to save a stranded farmer from the swollen Kariangode River in Kannur, Rajesh was swept away by the currents.

His courage, selflessness and sacrifice will forever be a part of Keralam's story.

My deepest condolences to his wife Smt. Lekshmi, his two young sons Arshan and Abhishek, his parents Shri Rajasekharan and Smt. Geetha, and all those who loved him.

I pray that his family finds the strength to bear this immeasurable loss.

Did you know that Lokmanya Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Maharishi Karve were all Mathematics Professors as well?

Tilak when asked what would he do once India got its independence, answered that he would go back to teaching mathematics!

All of them taught math at the Fergusson College in Pune.

Interestingly, it was the disagreements between Tilak and Gokhale that led to the former's resignation from the faculty in the 1890s.

Gokhale had to 'recruit' his college batchmate, Dhondo Keshav Karve (who was teaching in Mumbai) to the Fergusson College to fill in to teach Math, in Pune.

This led to Karve's move to Pune where we later founded the Hingne Stree Shikshan Sanstha and the SNDT Women's University.

Thank god, somebody is saying this. The need for entrance wont go away though. But the importance can. I have never understood why should you show (via coaching) to be capable to get knowledge, to develop skills. Ideally society should be able to provide resources for learning to anybody who wants to learn. Society should further provide guidance to anybody who needs one and who is genuinely interested.
Thankfully now that we dont need colleges any more. Youtube/Swayam is available to all.

We just need a good system to check those skills and provide certification.
We need to do away with colleges as only means to give degrees. This will resolve a lot of problems.

I am always surprised when someone asks, “What exactly has Modi done?”

Then I begin listing the accomplishments, and the mood invariably shifts.

I’ve never understood this collective short-term memory loss. It isn’t just puzzling - it can be fatal for both the nation and its people.

So today I decided to look at just one area: education.
Specifically, the institutions established since 2014.

Too often, we form our opinions on hearsay, emotion and sentiment rather than evidence. So let’s look at the numbers. They may well challenge what you think you know.

- Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

First 67 years: 16 IITs established.
Last 12 years: 7 new IITs established, taking the total to 23.
Capacity expansion: 5 existing IITs expanded, adding 6,576 seats.

Global footprint: Two international IIT campuses established - in Zanzibar and Abu Dhabi.

- Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)

First 67 years: 13 IIMs established.
Last 12 years: 8 new IIMs established, taking the total to 21.

Global footprint: In September 2025, IIM Ahmedabad opened its Dubai campus.

- All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)

First 67 years: 7 AIIMS established.
Last 12 years: 16 new AIIMS established, taking the total to 23.

- Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs)

First 67 years: 9,977 ITIs.
Last 12 years: 4,705 new ITIs, taking the total to 14,682.

Skill development: PM–SETU (Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs), launched in October 2025, will upgrade 1,000 Government ITIs under a hub-and-spoke model.

- Universities

First 67 years: 723 universities.
Last 12 years: 607 new universities, taking the total to 1,330.

- Colleges

First 67 years: 38,500 colleges.
Last 12 years: 13,500 new colleges, taking the total to 52,000.

- Medical Colleges

First 67 years: 431 medical colleges.
Last 12 years: 387 new medical colleges, taking the total to 818.

- MBBS Seats

First 67 years: 51,348 seats.
Last 12 years: 77,628 additional seats, taking the total to 128,976.

- Postgraduate (PG) Medical Seats

First 67 years: 31,185 seats.
Last 12 years: 36,990 additional seats, taking the total to 68,175.

- Internationalisation of Higher Education

15 foreign universities are expected to establish campuses in India.

The result is Zaynich, a novel intravenous antibiotic designed to treat complex urinary tract infections. Wockhardt estimates the drug could eventually generate annual sales of as much as $2 billion.

It's a shame no major film has been made about Biju Patnaik. He lived a life that sounds almost fictional:

In 1938, he flew his entire wedding procession by aircraft to Rawalpindi for his marriage to Gyanwati Sethi (who became the first Indian woman to hold a commercial pilot’s license, and the couple later flew daring missions together.)

While serving in the Royal Indian Air Force (including as head of Air Transport Command), he secretly ferried freedom fighters like Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, and Aruna Asaf Ali to their hideouts. He also airdropped 'Quit India' leaflets to Indian troops while evacuating British families.

The British once jailed him for transporting nationalist leaders and distributing anti-British literature but also honored him for bravery in evacuating civilians from Japanese-occupied Burma.

During WWII, he flew daring missions delivering arms and supplies to Soviet forces in Stalingrad, and over the treacherous 'Hump' route to China in
support of Chinese Nationalist forces against the Japanese.

In July 1947, he and his wife flew a Dakota into Indonesia, landed on an improvised airstrip while evading Dutch anti-aircraft fire, rescued Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir, refuelled using abandoned Japanese fuel, and flew him safely to India via Singapore.

A couple of months later, during the Pakistani invasion of Kashmir, he airlifted one of the first Indian troops into Srinagar.

The same year he founded Kalinga Airlines, one of India's earliest private airlines.

As Odisha CM post-1962 India-China war, he secretly visited CIA headquarters at Langley to forge a covert India-US partnership against China, which led to the Aviation Research Centre (ARC) at Charbatia, which supported U-2 recon missions over Tibet.

He was also a legendary administrator and statesman, laying much of the foundation of Odisha's industrial empire (mines, ports, heavy industries etc).

When he passed away, Indonesia observed 7 days of state mourning. Russia observed 1 day. He remains the only person in Indian history whose body was draped in the national flags of 3 nations - India, Indonesia, and Russia.

Few public figures have left such a footprint.

His extraordinary life needs to be brought to the big screen.

Zero fatalities, round-the-clock monitoring, and smarter wildlife protection in action.

Developed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, this innovative system uses 12 thermal camera-equipped towers, monitored by 25 forest staff members. The result? Zero elephant fatalities on the tracks during this period.

The system operates 24/7, detecting elephant movements and alerting train operators in real-time—allowing them to slow down or stop trains to prevent collisions.

At 11:46 AM on 6 July 2026, more than half of India's electricity came from clean energy sources, even as system demand hit 221 GW.

Although a brief peak, this is a strong signal of where India’s grid is headed.

If a salaried person wants to build a software application or digital services agency, the entry barrier is virtually zero.

They just need a laptop and an internet connection.

But if the same person wants to start manufacturing...

They need:
• Land
• Factory space
• Expensive machinery
• 6-12 months of approvals
• Huge upfront capital

My suggestion to the Government of India:

Build Manufacturing Parks for first-time entrepreneurs.

Instead of selling 10-acre plots, create buildings with 500-1,000 sq. ft. ready-to-use factory units.

Every unit should come with:
• 3-phase electricity already connected
• Pollution & fire approvals already cleared
• Shared CNC machines, injection moulding, testing labs & warehouses
• Common logistics and loading docks
• Month-to-month rentals instead of land purchases
• Single online portal to book a unit within 7 days

Let engineers keep their jobs while testing manufacturing on a small scale.

We built co-working spaces for software.

It's time we built co-factories for manufacturing.

It was crying in pain. The floodwaters kept rising. And there was nowhere left to run.

As heavy rains flooded Vadrai village in Maharashtra's Palghar district, Manish spotted an injured street dog with a broken leg, stranded and terrified.

Instead of walking away, he carefully placed the helpless animal in a basket, carried it through the floodwaters, and brought it to safety.

In a disaster, it's easy to think only about saving ourselves. But compassion is measured by the lives we refuse to leave behind.
