Dear Comrades,

The fight for Five-Day Banking must not be seen merely as a struggle for implementation of an agreement that has remained pending for more than 30 months. This is a fight for our existence, our dignity, our families and our fundamental right to a humane working life.

Public Sector Bank employees serve far more customers than our private-sector counterparts. Even with private banks accounting for a substantial share of the banking market, it is overwhelmingly the Public Sector Banks and their employees who carry the burden of Government-sponsored schemes, financial inclusion, social-sector banking and the last-mile delivery of public policy.

We work for institutions owned by the people and for a Government that expects us to reach every citizen. We have never shied away from that responsibility. But those who expect us to serve the nation must also recognise one simple truth:

We are not robots. We are not machines. We are not AI tools. We are human beings.

We have families waiting for us, children who need our time, parents who need our care, and lives beyond targets, reviews, late-night meetings and relentless workplace pressure.

We are not asking for privilege. We are asking for dignity, balance and justice.

The growing culture of excessive working hours, constant pressure and an increasingly toxic work environment cannot become the new normal. Five-Day Banking is one important step towards restoring humanity to our workplaces.

Save the banker. Save the banking family. Respect the commitment already made.

Five-Day Banking is not a luxury.
It is not an unreasonable demand.
It is a just demand whose time has come.

Let us stand together, for ourselves, for our families and for the generations of bankers who will come after us.

Five-Day Banking is For Dignity. For Family. For a Humane Workplace.

March ahead with courage and unity for the three-day strike from 28th to 30th September and make it a resounding success. No fear, no threat and no intimidation can weaken our collective resolve. Officers and employees stand together , we are all strikers in this historic struggle.

A small counter-question: if 5-day banking is supposedly impractical, how are major banking systems across the world managing it?

Look at BRICS itself.

5-day working for employees does not mean banking services disappear for two days.

Digital banking, ATMs, mobile banking, call centres and other channels continue beyond branch hours. Where genuine physical service is required, the bank and customers already managing the same as per rules.

We already follows a 5-day week in RBI, Government offices and several other financial institutions. Even the IBA has already submitted the proposal to the Government for declaring all Saturdays as bank holidays.

So the question should not be, “How will customers survive if bankers get two weekly holidays?”

The better question is: Why should in India bank employees be denied a modern 5-day work week when banking itself has become increasingly digital and comparable service models are functioning across the world?
Customer service and employees’ work-life balance can go hand in hand.

The Central Government has followed a 5-day working week since 1985, almost from the time you began your distinguished journalism career in 1984.

Central & many State Government offices, NABARD, SEBI, stock exchanges and several other service-oriented institutions already function on a 5-day week. Banking employees are only seeking the same reasonable work-life balance.

Customer convenience need not suffer. Even today, some banks operate Sunday-working branches with staggered weekly offs. The same principle can easily provide selected Saturday-working branches, with their staff getting an alternative weekly off, say on Monday. Solutions for genuine customer requirements are entirely possible.

More importantly, banking today is available 24×7 through ATMs, UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, NEFT/RTGS and other digital channels. But behind this round-the-clock banking are human beings who increasingly find there is virtually no disconnect from work. Bank employees are facing growing workloads, constant connectivity and burnout. A proper weekend is not merely about an additional holiday, it is about mental well-being and returning to work more productive and efficient.

Bankers ensure 24×7 banking for the country. They too deserve a genuine weekend, like employees of other major institutions.
