@ori_goldberg I’m so very sorry to hear your terrible news. Your father was a beacon of humanity and sense—we had talked an about him writing a book, just before he became sick. What a loss. I wish you much strength and consolation in your father’s great wisdom and compassion.
@jstein_notus And his call for Palestinians in Gaza to die every night got him two more Knesset seats in the polls. What doesn’t he represent, exactly?
CBS YouGov poll: 61% of Americans oppose weapons aid to Israel’s assault in Gaza. 77% of Democrats and 63% of self-identifying moderates reject US weapons aid to Israel.
77% of under 30 oppose weapons aid to Israel, 75% of Black Americans, 66% of women.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza has just published a 649-page document with the the name, age, gender, ID number of every Palestinian killed in Gaza from October 7 to August 31 that it has info for (over 34k out of 40k). The 1st 14 pages the age is listed as 0 (under 1 year old)
@ori_goldberg Your understanding of Israeli society is so rare—clear-eyed and unflinching but nuanced. I’m grateful for every one of your posts. They are a comfort.
The 3-Weeks Deal:
End the war within 3 weeks. Israeli withdrawal from Gaza over the 3 weeks. All 101 Israeli hostages will be released over the 3 weeks in parallel to the release of an agreed number and list of names of Palestinian prisoners.
One of the Hamas leaders wrote me this morning:
I appreciate your efforts and hope you succeed to bring the deal.
We support your proposal, all leaders.
But I think Netanyahu will reject it.
Me to Hamas leader:
He will reject it - but we will force it on him - we are also putting the pressure on Washington. There are also 2 groups of senior formal military people who are working to put the pressure on and a group of very good and powerful people from the families.
(Gershon Baskin, September 3, 2024)
Why does my friend from Gaza care about the hostages more than the Israeli government?
Also, why is she, displaced in Gaza, able to hold more complexity than American leftists?

[1] In Sep 2022, when talk began on the possibility of the IDF returning to conduct airstrikes in the WB, I published this🧵as a warning.
Some called me an alarmist. I wish I had been wrong.
But about 20% of Pal casualties in the WB since Oct 7 are from IL airstrikes.

Today, @keithellison & I chaired an official DNC panel bringing Palestinian voices & pain to the convention. Uncommitted’s Layla Elabed, @RepAndyLevin, & more. Focused on Gaza & what must be done to change US policy. The panel was a 1st, a good sign from Harris2024
Watch Guy Peled @guypch2news, the legal correspondent of Channel 12, speak about the recent pogrom in the Pal village of Jit.
I doubt we would have heard this kind of talk in IL mainstream media without the sanctions on violent settlers.
The sanctions are having an impact.
Death and desolation. Constant, unimaginable horror. Israel no longer thinks this is jutifiable. Israel hopes this is deniable. It is not. This is an inexcusable, unforgivable crime. It strains the mind and crushes the heart. It is inhuman and all too human.
Settler violence against #Palestinains is attributable to the State of #Israel and its central and local government: 1. Settler violence is instructed, directed, and controlled by the state. 2. Settler violence is committed by persons exercising government authority. 3. Settler violence is aided and supported by State organs, including Ministries, regional and local settlement councils.
I have seen many human rights violations in my life. I was exposed to many grave injustices committed by Israel and by Israelis. But nothing prepared me for this report by @btselem. Ever since I read it I can't stop thinking that what is described in it is happening even now.
