Egg-citing times! 🥚🥚The #southerngiantpetrel is one of #Gough’s long-term monitoring species with nests marked & checked at our study colony since 2010. Adults are busy rebuilding nests, rekindling relationships & 🥁... have just started laying eggs! #proudparentmoments
Some ropey shakey video! I was so excited @Scillypelagics last night I didn’t know which way to look or point the box brownie! Shearwater & dolphin frenzy topped off with some great views of whales…wait for it #humpback & #finwhale also watch out for Sooties amongst the Manxies
Our Scilly cetacean detective, Martin Goodey, matched yesterday’s Scilly Humpback to one photographed off Ireland 🇮🇪 in 2017. Left Scilly, right Ireland
Whales again! Our last scheduled Birder Special Pelagic of 2021 found 2 Fin Whales, Humpback Whale, 2+ Great Shear, 35 Sooty Shear AND c 10,000 Manx over c 600 SB Common Dolphin. Never did I believe that I would see such a sight off the Isles of Scilly.
Absolutely stunning to see this happening at long last. What a monumental challenge - Inspirational! Stay safe, and fingers crossed for breaks in the weather!
NEW FOOTAGE from #Gough Restoration operation!🚁🎥Whilst the weather has been poor & baiting has drawn to a halt, our team has spent the downtime sorting through the footage taken so far. With comms off island still limited, they prioritised sending this through - thanks team!
Dongtai Tiaozini, is being developed to show people birds, especially the Spoon-billed Sandpiper for which it is famed. Since last year, new facilities have popped up for refreshing visitors, and facilitating access to the tidal flats, the latter still under construction. 2/6
A White-necked Petrel and a Providence Petrel flying together off the coast of Aomori in Northern Japan. At 41.5N, this could be the northernmost record of the species in Japan (but there is a record from Sakhalin that's much further North)
