Hezbollah’s narrative rests on one enduring trick: presenting itself as the guardian of the state while preventing the state from becoming whole. When Israel violates, blame the government. When the government hesitates, question its courage. When the government considers consolidating authority, accuse it of surrender. Heads, Hezbollah wins. Tails, the state loses.
What is most striking in Qassem’s speech is not the rhetoric about Israel. It is the anxiety about internal debate. The real battleground is no longer the southern border; it is the concept of the Lebanese state itself. The weapons question is not about betrayal of martyrs or abandonment of Palestine. It is about whether Lebanon will ever function as a single polity rather than a negotiated coexistence between institutions and militias.
