Make no mistake about it, last night’s match had Jack Grealish written all over it. He was genuinely missed. That is the sort of games where Grealish would’ve been preferred over Doku: against well-organized defensive teams who’s dangerous on the counter-attacks and defend their flanks with several players (creating numerical superiority to hamper City’s chances of advancing through the wings).

On numerous occasions did Doku find himself in 1v2 situations and even sometimes 1v3 situations. All thanks to an outstanding defensive display by Gusto who was helped out by Palmer and sometimes even one of Chelsea’s midfielders. It didn’t make it any easier for Doku that City doesn’t play with a traditional LB leaving him pretty much isolated.

But this is where Jack Grealish shines. In those incredibly tight pockets, his abilities to hang onto the ball despite intense pressure, winning free-kicks in dangerous positions, not to mention his incredibly underrated defensive contributions (which is important against teams like Chelsea who sit back & counter-attack).

I really hope people realize that Jack Grealish is a key player in this team. Yes, he lacks G/A but his way of controlling the tempo of the game, hanging onto the ball etc was severely missed last night. Grealish & Doku are two completely different wingers and that’s why they complement each other so well.

Jeremy Doku did his best. He wasn’t “awful”. He was decent. He tried his best given the circumstances. But as I said, some games are more meant for Grealish and some games are more meant for Doku. That’s why we’re incredibly lucky to have these two ballers in our team 🩵
