The CJP protest may have captured public imagination today but to claim that it has taught India how to protest is both facile and historically dishonest.
Earlier too under the Modi regime, Indians took to the streets over the CAA-NRC, the farmers’ movement, the Jamia protests, the wrestlers’ agitation and the Hathras gang rape case. Many of those protests forced a powerful government to respond, reconsider policies and engage with public anger. The people who participated often paid a heavy price for their dissent from facing arrests, criminal cases to intimidation and relentless attempts to crush their spirit.
We do a disservice to countless activists and protesters when we erase their struggles or pretend that meaningful protest began only today.
The point should be to highlight students’ issue and amplify their concerns on paper leaks. It should not be an exercise in claiming ownership of dissent or seeking credit for protest itself
