NRL Analysis: Marker Systems On The Line
Following on from a couple of responses to Hudson Young’s work down the shortside list week, I wanted to cover some differences in marker systems close to the line.

Marker Policies On The Line
We see most teams send their first marker to the long side and second marker down the shortside.
The Newcastle Knights offered a prime example of what that looks like.

Puru On Debut
I introduced Niwhai Puru before his NRL debut on Friday night, and it took only eight minutes for the 24-year-old to score his first try.
The Feature Reel: Try of the Week
Daly Cherry-Evans and Nat Butcher trigger the action by swinging around to the long side late.
Having forced the Melbourne Storm to set their numbers for them down the short side, the pair flip to create an extra one on the long side.
What Is Hudson Seeing?
Some players just see the game differently to others. They notice cues some players miss, or don’t assess the risk and reward in anywhere near the same way. Hudson Young is the prime example among fowards.
The Feature Reel: Try of the Week
“There are more highlight-reel-worthy tries from Round 13, but the design and execution of this one by the Sydney Roosters had me watching it over and over.”

70% of set restarts are awarded by the 46th minute.
Brisbane have the worst net set restart count in the NRL, as well as a high rate of errors in their own half
It's not surprising they're behind early so often.
You know when somebody describes a player you’ve never seen before as “crafty”?
Everybody seems to know what that looks like from one word alone.
That’s Niwhai Puru.

Listen to the broadcast and you can hear the Knights defence scream “wide four” as the ball finds Sanders - likely something they previewed in detail before the match.

Moses is lethal down short sides and allows the Blues to play with two points of attack - Cleary and Tedesco on the long side, Moses down the shortside.
Strange can pose as a similar danger with this speed and footwork a proven danger in wide four situations.
The Feature Reel: Try of the Week
“Josiah Karapani’s try in the corner on Friday night is a prime example of how an attack coach can draw something up.”
