Needing money to rebuild St. Peter’s basilica, Pope Leo X announces a sale of indulgences to run for eight years beginning this day. Albert of Brandenberg, deeply in debt after purchasing his position as archbishop, is allowed to keep half the proceeds, but will not profit as greatly as he hopes because the indulgence will anger the friar Martin Luther, who will post his Ninety-Five Theses in response. The Reformation will result.

William Hunter, a 19-year-old Protestant apprentice, was burned at the stake in Brentwood, England, amid Queen Mary I’s campaign to crush the Reformation.

A silk-weaver’s assistant from London, Hunter had hidden a Bible in his workplace, defying Catholic edicts. Arrested after refusing to attend mass, he faced threats and offers of pardon but held firm to his faith.

Tied to the stake, he recited Psalm 51 ‘Have mercy on me, O God’ and called to his brother, ‘I am not afraid,’ as flames consumed him, joining the roll of Marian martyrs.

Death of Scottish clergyman George MacDonald who wrote novels to support himself. He became a pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow-writer Lewis Carroll.
In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works of Christian theology, including several collections of sermons. MacDonald’s writings will capture C. S. Lewis’s imagination, convincing him that true Christianity is not uninteresting.

Just because a Bible verse is frequently quoted does not mean it is fully understood. One example is this verse from Isaiah, “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment” (64:6). Or, as many people have it memorized: Our righteousness is “as filthy rags.”

Some of you are also aware that the Hebrew behind “filthy rags” is more literally “a garment of menstruation.”

A common misunderstanding is that Isaiah is going for the rhetorical “ick factor.” While that may be in play also, it is hardly the main point. We must hear these words through Leviticus ears, not view them from the perspective of modern feminine hygiene products.

Isaiah first says that we have all become like one who is “unclean.” In Hebrew, טָמֵא (ṭā·mē). This is a ritual category. One who has touched a corpse, has a skin disease, a male with a seminal emission, or a woman on her period is ritually unclean. That means he or she must first be made clean before entering the sanctuary to worship God.

Isaiah, drawing upon this ritual background, says that sins have made us unclean, so much so that even our best (“our righteous deeds”) are like a garment of menstruation, that is, a ritually unclean object, which, if one were to come into contact with it, would also make the person who touched it unclean.

That being so, we cannot appear before God this way. We need cleansing. Then, and only then, can we stand on holy ground.

Christ provides this cleansing. He washes us pure in holy baptism. Though our sins are as scarlet, they are as white as snow. Our purity is found in him. When we are in Christ, we have become those who are clean, and wrapped round us is the robe of Christ’s righteousness.
