A very serious fuel shortage is about to hit Kenya and it will not be an accident of fate. It will be a failure of leadership.

The war in Iran has destabilized global oil markets. The Strait of Hormuz the artery that carries nearly 20% of the world’s oil is under threat. When that chokepoint shakes, the entire planet feels it. Oil prices spike. Insurance costs explode. Tankers stall. Supply chains choke.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: every serious country prepares for this. Kenya did not.

We import almost all our fuel. We have no strategic petroleum cushion worth mentioning. We locked ourselves into fragile external supply arrangements and prayed global stability would hold. Now it hasn’t and ordinary Kenyans will pay the price.

If pumps run dry next week, matatus stop, food prices surge, and small businesses collapse under transport costs, don’t blame Iran. Don’t blame global markets. Blame the man who promised competence and “bottom-up economics” yet built no buffer for a predictable geopolitical shock.

Leadership is not chest-thumping at rallies. Leadership is planning for worst-case scenarios before they happen.

When oil prices surged before, excuses were ready. When global shocks happened before, fingers pointed elsewhere. But governance is about anticipation. The Middle East has been a powder keg for decades. Any serious administration would have built reserves, diversified supply routes, secured alternative contracts, and insulated citizens from exactly this type of crisis.

Instead, we are exposed.

If fuel disappears from stations next week, it will not just be a supply issue. It will be proof that this government runs on public relations instead of preparedness.

And when transport fares double, when unga rises again, when manufacturers scale down, remember: wars don’t cripple nations. Weak leadership does.
