On this International Nurses Day 2026, we proudly honor Saudi nurses and nurses around the world whose dedication, compassion, and leadership continue to shape the future of healthcare and save countless lives.
This year’s theme, “Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” is more than a slogan — it is a global call to invest in nurses, strengthen the profession, and recognize the critical role nurses play in advancing healthcare systems, improving patient outcomes, and building healthier societies.
Today, the conversation must go beyond appreciation and gratitude. We must continue working toward:
• Stronger nursing education and professional development
• Supportive and safe clinical practice environments
• Excellence in patient safety and quality of care
• Mental wellbeing and resilience among healthcare professionals
• Greater nursing leadership, innovation, and visibility
• Empowering the next generation of nurses locally and globally
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, nurses are playing a transformative role in achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 through healthcare transformation, innovation, research, digital health, and community engagement. Saudi nurses continue to demonstrate excellence, professionalism, and humanity across all healthcare sectors.
To every Saudi nurse and every nurse across the globe:
Thank you for your unwavering commitment, sacrifices, and compassionate care. Your impact extends far beyond hospitals and clinics — you are the heart of healthcare and a driving force for a healthier future.
Happy International Nurses Day 2026.
I was honored to participate as a speaker at the 4th International Nursing & Midwifery Conference & Exhibition 2026 at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University.
My session, “Embracing Digital Transformation: Paving the Way for the Future of Health in Saudi Arabia,” highlighted the critical role of digital innovation in reshaping healthcare delivery and advancing nursing practice across the Kingdom.
The discussion focused on how digital transformation can:
• Enhance the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare services
• Empower nurses through data-driven decision-making and smart technologies
• Improve patient outcomes and experiences through integrated digital solutions
• Support Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 in building a sustainable and innovative healthcare system
I also had the privilege of participating as a panel discussion member on the topic: “Effective Nursing Leadership: How Can We Reduce Staff Turnover and Make the Nursing Profession More Attractive After Employment?”, where we explored practical leadership strategies to improve retention, engagement, and professional satisfaction among nurses.
It was a privilege to exchange ideas with such an inspiring group of healthcare professionals, researchers, and leaders who are collectively driving the future of healthcare through innovation and collaboration.
Special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Hanan Alharbi, Dean of the College of Nursing, for her warm hospitality, outstanding organization, and continuous support in making this conference a remarkable success.
Grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to contributing further to these impactful conversations.

Why do some nursing students burn out… while others remain resilient?
Our newly published multinational study explored this important question.
We analyzed data from 1,562 nursing students across six Middle Eastern countries, examining how empathy and emotion regulation influence academic burnout and performance.
Here is what we found:
🔹 Students with higher empathy reported
• lower academic fatigue
• less disengagement
• higher perceived academic performance
But there was a critical insight…
👉 Empathy alone is not enough.
The factor that made the difference was emotion regulation.
Emotion regulation both mediated and moderated the relationship between empathy and academic burnout. In other words:
• Empathy can protect students
• But without emotion regulation skills, empathy may also lead to emotional exhaustion
This highlights an important implication for nursing education worldwide:
If we want to develop a resilient and sustainable nursing workforce, we must go beyond teaching empathy and communication skills.
We should also intentionally teach students how to:
✔ regulate emotional responses
✔ cope with clinical stress
✔ maintain healthy professional boundaries
Emotion regulation is not a “soft skill.”
It is a professional survival skill.

Grateful to collaborate with an outstanding international team of scholars on this important work.
Together, we hope this research contributes to supporting nursing students and strengthening the future of the nursing profession.
