I am grateful to @rharris334 and @smh for highlighting an issue that goes beyond a single competition.

Ukrainian teenagers, many of whom have lived through missile attacks, air raid sirens and the loss of classmates and loved ones, should not be forced to compete alongside a state-approved Russian delegation as though Russia’s war of aggression does not exist.

Australia has consistently recognised Russia as a malicious cyber actor, imposed extensive sanctions, and stood firmly with Ukraine. International educational events should reflect those same values of responsibility, solidarity and respect for the rules-based international order.

Our young people deserve not only opportunities to excel, but also the care, dignity and support that every child should expect.

The claim comes from a former editor-in-chief of Russia’s state TV news program Vesti. Not that anyone is particularly surprised.

According to him, after the 2011 Bolotnaya protests, a separate news package was prepared specifically for Putin. Negative stories were removed, while favorable reports and achievements were highlighted.

The former state TV editor says Putin was increasingly isolated from reality. He even claims that after the sinking of the cruiser Moskva, Putin was not informed of its destruction for more than a week.

That might explain his unwavering confidence that everything is “going according to plan.”

All Member States agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova.
