OPINION: We Cannot Afford to Let a BLM March Organizer Win Tennessee’s 5th District
Devante Hill just told Memphis media he’s “destined” for the newly drawn 5th Congressional District seat.
Destined.
That’s the word a 34-year-old Black Lives Matter activist who organized pandemic-era marches uses when he looks at a congressional district that stretches from Memphis into Middle Tennessee and up toward Kentucky. Not “I’m going to work harder than everyone else.” Not “I’m going to deliver results for working families.” Just destiny.
Let’s be clear about what that actually means.
This is the same movement that spent 2020 burning cities, demanding the defunding of police, and turning “mostly peaceful protests” into a national experiment in lawlessness. Hill was out front organizing those marches. Now he wants a seat in the United States Congress representing Tennessee families, Tennessee businesses, and Tennessee children.
We cannot afford that.
Tennessee is not a laboratory for radical social theory. We are a state that values law and order, parental rights, secure borders, and actual results over slogans. The last thing the 5th District needs is another politician whose political identity was forged in the chaos of 2020. We already lived through the crime spikes, the businesses that never reopened, and the police departments that were handcuffed by progressive rhetoric. We do not need to import that energy into Congress.
Hill’s campaign is already wrapping itself in the language of destiny and inevitability. That is classic activist framing. It is not serious governing. Destiny is what people claim when they don’t want to debate policy. Destiny is what they invoke when their actual record is marching in the streets instead of delivering results.
Look at the district itself. It is newly drawn. It is competitive. It is exactly the kind of seat where a well-funded radical can slip through if conservatives stay home or treat the race like a side show. That is how you lose ground. That is how soft left candidates who talk about “equity” and “systemic” everything start writing the laws that affect your kids, your schools, and your streets.
We cannot afford it.
Tennessee has already rejected the most extreme versions of the 2020 agenda. We have stood for parental rights. We have stood for law enforcement. We have stood against the soft-on-crime policies that turned major cities into open-air experiments. Putting a BLM march organizer in Congress would be a direct contradiction of everything the state has fought to protect.
This is not about race. It is about record and ideology. A man whose political brand is tied to an organization that celebrated the destruction of 2020 does not get a free pass just because he is from Memphis. He has to answer for what that movement actually produced: higher crime, damaged communities, and a generation of kids who watched adults burn down the very neighborhoods they claimed to care about.
Tennessee deserves better than destiny talk. We deserve candidates who talk about results, safety, economic growth, and protecting the next generation. We deserve people who understand that “mostly peaceful” was never peaceful, and that the families in this district are still paying the price for the chaos that movement helped unleash.
Devante Hill can claim destiny all he wants.
The voters of the 5th District get the final say.
And they should make it very clear: this is not your destiny. This is Tennessee. We are not going backwards.2

It’s not my job to police the internet either…
but reporting cauliflower cookies as “harmful content” is the real public service announcement we didn’t ask for.
They’re just low-carb, high-agency fuel for people who actually read labels and refuse to let processed sugar run their lives.
Some of us are busy raising kids, running, building empires, and still finding time to make snacks that don’t spike blood sugar.
Maybe the real harmful content is the reflex to cancel anything that isn’t boxed and sugar-loaded.
