I remember when State Farm Stadium (Arizona Cardinals) was being proposed, it was designed with a retracting field. It was sold as being funded through taxes on rental cars and hotels in Arizona because only people from outside the state rent cars and hotels in AZ. Of course, that's not true. And the cherry on top? Kids could use the retracting field for their league sports. If memory serves, that didn't last too long.
