12.1 million Canadians got the one-time grocery payment in June.

That's the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit.
The average cheque was $252.

In July the GST credit went up 25 per cent for five years. About 12.5 million people get it.

The total cost is $12.4 billion through 2031, according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer.

Ottawa calls it relief.

A country that has to top up grocery money for nearly a third of its people is admitting the problem.
