According to economist @JustinWolfers Canada is creating jobs at a rate that is 4 times that of the U.S. Incredible news. This has been a good week in Canada.
This afternoon, Canada’s Chief Trade Negotiator and I met with provincial and territorial Trade Ministers, as well as members of the Advisory Committee on Canada–U.S. Economic Relations.
We provided an update on Canada’s discussions with the United States, including our engagements in Washington, D.C. this week, and our ongoing, intensive efforts to reach a comprehensive deal that benefits workers and businesses in both countries.

The main argument I make is that using oil as leverage, as a weapon, would be very deleterious to Canada’s efforts to position ourselves as a reliable, trustworthy supplier of oil and find new markets where security of supply is now at a premium. That is the long game.
But you also don’t explain how weaponizing our oil would benefit Canada in trade negotiations with USA, other than it would allow us to inflict some short term pain and that may be briefly emotionally satisfying for some people. How would our interests be served by that, specifically?
Right now the country is reaping many rewards from our robust oil trade and the concomitant revenues, investment and FX. Why cut off our nose to spite our face?
