🇦🇺 Cristian Volpato showed exactly why so many Australian fans are excited about his future.

Even in a disappointing result against the USA, Volpato looked like one of the few players capable of changing the game. Every time he got on the ball, he wanted to drive forward, take risks and make things happen. Australia has often lacked that creative spark in the final third, and Volpato brought it.

The biggest issue for the Socceroos in the first half wasn’t effort, it was confidence and control.

Australia sat too deep, allowed the USA too much possession and struggled to play through the American press. The midfield couldn’t get enough touches on the ball, which left the forwards isolated and chasing shadows. When Australia won possession back, too many attacks ended with rushed clearances instead of building meaningful passages of play.

The difference when Volpato got involved was obvious. He was willing to receive the ball under pressure, turn defenders and carry Australia up the pitch. That’s the kind of bravery you need at World Cup level.

The loss hurts, but if there’s one major positive to take away, it’s that Cristian Volpato looks ready for a much bigger role. Australia looked far more dangerous when the game started opening up and he was at the heart of it.
