Flew to Denver alone to attend ASHG conference this week. Although here it’s the 5th of November, it’s my 35th birthday by Australian time (6th of Nov). It is also the US election so I was hesitant to go out for a birthday dinner given the state of things but I’m very glad I did
Day 1 of HGSA conference done. Some super interesting talks. My poster session is now over so I can just relax and take everything in. Conference dinner is at sea world tomorrow! #hgsa2024#HumanGenetics
August seems to be a very exciting month in my post-doc. Yesterday, a paper was submitted. Today, a paper was accepted. This weekend I leave for a conference. Following week, I plan to submit another paper. Then last week of August I leave for another conference. #BusyAcademic
Recently awarded the Monash Victorian Heart Institute’s ASHRA ECR travel grant! I will present the work our team has conducted, screening ~2500 participants for CHIP-associated variants using saliva-derived DNA, at an international conference later this year.
Listened to some very interesting talks today at the Cancer Bioinformatics Australia Symposium. This is first year it’s expanded to a national conference, previous years it was called Victorian Cancer Bioinformatics Symposium. Didn’t present but I judged posters and speed talks
Gave my first talk at an intrepid meeting in lorne today. The talk was an overview and update on a project I’m apart of detecting clonal haematopoiesis somatic variants in saliva. As well as a germline aspect. Nervous in the talk, but the day itself was so interesting.
Precision Medicine’s Christmas party/lunch was go-karting and I won first place! (All medals were silver). It was such a fun way to blow off some steam that I didn’t realise I needed.
Sooo, I kinda locked myself out of my Twitter account when I changed numbers months ago…😅. A lot has happened, an interstate cancer conference, a healthcare symposium, 2 projects finished up, and I started a postdoc. Currently in phase 2 of a cool project involving CHIP genes!
Old photo from my sampling across the nullarbor in 2019. Pretty cool to see the colour variation of sleepies from east to west. Although that wasn’t the purpose of the trip #Tiliqua#sleepy#bobtail#lizards#Tiliquarugosa
Had a quick trip out field with @RubyMcKenna13. 35 sleepies in 3 days is some solid sampling. Highlights: got bogged; ruby got crapped on…a lot; kept a pie warm on the dash; and some pretty scenery.

Biodiversity losses tend to be under-reported, especially for invertebrates. 📉 🐝 With the help of ALA data, @JamesDoreyPhoto and colleagues are changing that. Their study of 553 Aussie bee species post-fire found 11 are now eligible for the @IUCNRedList.

Honestly, how good does it feel when you try a new little code to save yourself time and it works perfectly first go — and in seconds. I know it’s nothing big, it’s only converting RMD to an R script, but it made me happy 😂
