An incredible spell this morning from Ben Stokes to make history at Trent Bridge ❤️
We have reached the inevitable end of Keir Starmer’s premiership. He promised us change but then utterly failed to show imagination and grip. Britain is governable, but poetry is as important as prose when you lead a nation. Sad on a personal level but politics is an unforgiving business.
As I say in my column, the Makerfield by-election was marked by a staggering array of spending commitments/semi-promises.
The charitable explanation is this isn't spendthrift socialism - Andy is a people-pleaser (see @mrianleslie) who hears people complain and wants to help.
My prayers are with the family of the driver killed in the Bedford train crash, and all those who have been injured. May God comfort and protect them, and equip all those who are caring for them in the aftermath of this tragic incident.
What many supporters don't realise is that when Catholics or other religious groups speak out against assisted suicide, it's nothing to do with forcing our religious beliefs on others. It's about our religious beliefs serving as a wellspring of concern for the poor, the marginalised, and the most vulnerable. It's the same as when we call for policies that prioritise the disabled, the unemployed, the homeless, migrants and the poor.
A history area brings the past to life at our #ChurchOfTheWeek, St Michael and All Angels in Llanfihangel y Creuddyn, Ceredigion. Believed to have been built in around 1268, the church has plenty of stories to share, and the churchyard is even older than the church itself.

Very sad to learn that Radio 4's The World Tonight is to be killed off in the latest round of BBC cuts. It has a long and honourable history as one of the more thoughtful BBC news programmes and I am proud to have been associated with it for more than twenty years.
