The iconic image circulating on social media originates from the classic comedy sketch The Roxbury Guys, which aired on the American television entertainment show Saturday Night Live on May 18, 1996. The clip features actors Chris Kattan, Will Ferrell, a female extra playing a club girl, and comedian Jim Carrey. The sketch tells the story of single guys who love hitting bars and clubs to party and dance, with the unique twist that the entire group says nothing, only continuously performing a hilarious and perfectly synchronized head-bobbing dance to the beat of the hit Eurodance track What Is Love by singer Haddaway. The sheer excellence and exaggerated facial expressions of Jim Carrey turned this episode into one of the most iconic moments in 1990s comedy history, which was later adapted into the feature film A Night at the Roxbury in 1998.

The madness and absolute spontaneity in Jim Carrey's body language turned this sketch into an immortal legend, as he did not utter a single line of dialogue or deliver comedy in the traditional way. The original script only required the actors to keep a straight face and bob their heads to the rhythm of the music, but Jim Carrey took it upon himself to add two brilliant unscripted moments: the act of blowing dust off a CD with a hilarious facial expression, and unexpectedly pulling out a set of fake teeth as a souvenir to make a joke, which completely caught the studio audience and his co-stars off guard. The segments of the trio sitting in the convertible and driving past clubs were actually pre-taped scenes shot at a frantic pace at 2 p.m. on Friday right at the studio of the Late Night with Conan O'Brien show to make it in time for the live broadcast on Saturday night. The song What Is Love, released in 1993 by German-Trinidadian singer Haddaway, already had a certain standing before but only truly exploded into a pop culture icon and became forever linked with driving and head-bobbing memes after this sketch went on the air.

In that moment of artistic ecstasy on set, Jim Carrey's genius was most clearly revealed through how he completely broke the rehearsed script to introduce wild acts of absolute improvisation. As soon as the music kicked in, he began chewing gum frantically with a distorted facial expression, then suddenly opened his mouth, pushed the gum out with his tongue, and deliberately forced his two co-stars Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan to share that very piece of gum with their mouths while head-bobbing, forcing both to hold their breath to avoid breaking character and ruining the live performance. Originally, the dance was just a gentle nod to the beat, but when Jim Carrey joined in, he escalated the momentum of the bob by violently slamming his own head against the heads of Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan, creating a chain of consecutive collisions so hard that the actors actually felt pain and dizziness after the sketch ended. In the middle of the sketch when the group approached the girls, he suddenly froze and executed a series of shoulder twitches, wide-eyed stares, and abnormal neck shakes as if being electrocuted, utilizing his signature facial-release skills. In the nightclub scene, overwhelmed by the excitement of the dance, Jim Carrey pulled off an uncontrolled backflip over the sofa where the girls were sitting; although this fall was an accident caused by a slippery stage, with the instincts of a physical comedy genius, he turned it into a seamless part of the dance as if the character did it on purpose to impress the ladies.
