📢Wildfire is not supposed to be a bad thing.

It has been around for millions of years, and is a normal part of many healthy forest ecosystems.

But then we came along.

Our decades-long “put everything out” approach to wildfire management in many areas has left forests overcrowded and loaded with potential fuel.

Forests had previously adapted to the periodic fires that clean out dead, organic material, release nutrients and seeds, and open up the forest canopy to the sun to allow for new life on the forest floor.

Humans continue to build communities and assets into wildland environments, increasing our footprint on the landscape and thus, our chances of negative interactions with wildfire.

And human activity has greatly accelerated the rate of climate change – an otherwise natural process that had been more gradual and conducive to environmental adaptation.

Today, these effects are amplified at higher latitudes, resulting in longer, hotter fire seasons and an increased likelihood of prolonged periods of extreme heat and dry weather.

The result is a perfect storm for large, intense wildfires that can be destructive to human communities and interests, no matter what their cause.

This is not to say that humans can’t find ways of safely and responsibly dwelling within wildland environments. And this we must do.

Until then, when the big one starts, we aren’t stopping it.
