Reverend Augustine Kipruto left his teaching job in 1997 and travelled to the United States to study Theology. When he returned to Kenya in 2002, he came back with a Yashica analogue camera that used the famous Kodak film.
That camera marked the beginning of a remarkable photography journey. He founded Pilgrims Auto Visual Studio in Eldama Ravine town, operating from Kamatunda Building, where many residents remember the studio for its photography and video production work.
Augustine covered weddings, community events and other important occasions. He would also move from door to door during special occasions such as Christmas, taking photographs even when there was little or no payment. His motivation was not always money, but his passion for photography.
Through that work, he was able to support his family and educate his children.
In Eldama Ravine, Augustine became known for appearing at events, sometimes without prior notice, taking hundreds of photographs and quietly leaving. He proudly referred to himself as a Pilgrims Photographer because his travels took him on pilgrimages across Africa and beyond, always with his camera in hand.
Over the years, he photographed numerous historical and cultural sites, particularly across East Africa. His work captured moments and places that might otherwise have gone undocumented.
Perhaps the most remarkable part of his story is the legacy he passed on to his son, Joshua Kigen, who is pictured with a camera.
Inspired by his father, Joshua established Pilgrims Photography and developed the same passion for capturing important moments through the lens. His love for photography has now taken him to a professional level, where he works as a photographer at the office of the PS for ICT and Digital Economy, Engineer John Tanui.
This is more than a story about photography. It is a story of passion, sacrifice, mentorship and a father whose work inspired his son to follow the same path.
On World Photographers Day, we celebrate Mzee Augustine Kipruto for the inspiration he has given to his family and community, his son Joshua Kigen, and photographers everywhere who continue to preserve our memories through their cameras.
Keep capturing the moments that become memories for generations to come.

Any form of demand for violence in innocent Kenyans must be condemned, prosecuted and perpetrators held to account.
