The Nino 3.4 sea surface temperature (preliminary) is at 29.65°C, as of August 9th, the 72nd consecutive record daily high, on its way to crushing the previous record high of 29.82°C, set November 17th, 2015.

The Nino 3.4 anomaly currently sits at 2.77°C above the 1991-2020 average.

As of August 5th, global sea-surface temperatures just set a new preliminary record high of 21.20��C. This breaks the previous record high of 21.17°C set on April 24, 2024.

On July 20th, the global surface temperature rose above 17.0°C. This is only the third year on record reaching 17.0°C, the other two years are 2023 and 2024.

2026's developing Super El Niño is neck and neck with 1997 as the strongest El Niño for late July on record, using the relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI), which takes into account warming relative to the rest of the ocean. Using the raw Oceanic Niño Index (ONI), 2026 is blowing every other year completely out of the water for mid-July. Because climate change has already warmed the ocean's overall baseline temperature, NOAA has switched its monitoring of El Niño strength from ONI, which compares only to a fixed historical average, to RONI, which compares Niño 3.4 warming relative to the rest of the tropical ocean.

The current ensemble forecast has El Niño peaking at 3.0°C (RONI) in November (h/t @hausfath), which would be the strongest El Niño on record since records began in 1850.

Today marks the 50th consecutive day of record-breaking global ocean temperatures.

Sea surface temperatures in the key El Niño monitoring zone have risen faster since New Year's Day than in any year on record.

We are on pace for the strongest El Niño on record (reliable records began in 1850).

2026 will more than likely be the second-warmest year on record globally, with 2027 virtually guaranteed to be the warmest year on record.
