Unlikely to repair the damage, and notably without a formal apology, this is the closest Trump will come to retracting his slur against non-US NATO troops who fought so bravely in Afghanistan. Is it enough to salvage the King’s visit to the USA in the spring?
One of the really good guys we meet on the road - thoughtful, kind, generous, perceptive. Wishing you well for the next journey & new adventures. @gmb@itn
Far from seeking to downplay the explosive Trump interview on Europe with @politico the White House is heavily promoting it, amplifying it across MAGA world.
Amid renewed hopes today that a diplomatic solution is within reach, this is one of the most astute observations about Europe’s multi-layered failure over Ukraine.
A very timely and pertinent question about the lack of any serious peace proposal from the EU by the fourth year of the war.
I would say it’s a combination of rational interests and the degradation of political leadership and expertise. The European centrist elites are rather cynically buying themselves time at the cost of Ukrainian lives and the destruction of Ukraine, aiming to rearm the EU and hoping for Russia’s weakening. But this strategy is rooted not only in the structural interests of transnational capital, but also their incapacity to provide leadership for an inclusive security structure, a lack of understanding of long-term global changes, an expertise crisis regarding post-Soviet countries, a blatant overestimation of Ukrainian resilience and underestimation of Russia’s resilience, and a failure to anticipate that the sociopolitical consequences of this strategy within the EU could make it not less, but even more unstable, fragmented, and vulnerable.
Punchy, yes, Harry. But when I asked the question to Homan outside the West Wing, it was pretty clear to me that the border Czar misspoke. I really don’t think he was trying to ignite a diplomatic firestorm!
The Jamaican government has responded to @itvnews reporting on the slow hurricane relief effort, saying that this should be considered the world's first "Category Six" storm and no nation on earth could have coped with 185mph winds.
They survived the hurricane's arrival exactly a week ago. Now, after a distressingly slow and disjointed international emergency response, the needs of residents in western Jamaica are greater than ever.
Even today there remains a complete absence of significant aid supplies arriving here in western Jamaica, especially across St Elizabeth and Westmoreland parishes. The relief effort needs to be massively stepped up - and immediately.
