Sweden is proud to support the 11th #OurOceanConference taking place in Mombasa, Kenya this week—the first time this important global gathering is being held in Africa. 🌊🇸🇪🇪
The presence of the Swedish team at #OOC11 has been a grounding reminder of the shared commitment driving this work forward. I am happy to see governments, businesses, academia and civil society coming together with a common purpose: the sustainable management and protection of our oceans. This also highlights both the urgency of the challenges we face and the determination to address them through concrete action.
Under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future,” the discussions in Mombasa reflect not only concern for the health of our oceans, but also a strong sense of responsibility toward future generations.
Sweden has long supported the development of a sustainable blue economy in Kenya and across the region. With the Swedish team present at #OOC11, there are valuable opportunities to deepen existing partnerships and explore new cooperation in trade, investment, skills development and sustainable ocean management.
Met with H.E. Governor Lomorukai of @TurkanaCountyKE to discuss ongoing efforts towards enhanced refugee management, including improved access to documentation and strengthened county and national coordination towards refugee inclusion and integration. It was encouraging to talk about practical steps and areas of collaboration with Kenya as it advances the SHIRIKA Plan. We also had the opportunity to discuss Swedish support in the areas of agriculture and climate resilience.
Thank you, Your Excellency. Sweden and Kenya share long‑standing and close relations. We remain committed to multilateral cooperation for peace and security, as well as increased trade and investment for the prosperity of our societies.
Sweden is happy to have been pioneering the work on locally led climate action, all the way from the pilot phase in 2015 up to now. Currently, with a number of development partners onboard, this program covers all 47 counties in Kenya.
Underway now: the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Program Peer-to-Peer Learning Forum bringing together global delegates to explore how decentralised climate finance can strengthen locally led climate action.

The New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, discussed at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku. For Africa, this entails structured & tailored financing for #adaptation, #lossanddamage, and #capacitybuilding initiatives, alongside support for #lowcarbonpathway projects.
Despite the fact that there has been a substantial degree of increase (48%) in climate financing into the African continent, from USD 29.5 billion in 2019/20 to USD 43.7 billion in 2021/22, funding gaps across the #climatefinance landscape are still pronounced.
