SANWO-OLU HAILS TINUBU AS SENATE PASSES STATE POLICE BILL
_President is champion of true federalism, Lagos Governor says_
Lagos, Nigeria – [June 24, 2026] – Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, following the Senate’s passage of the constitutional amendment bill to establish State Police.
The Senate on Wednesday approved all 26 clauses of the bill in Committee of the Whole, marking what analysts call the most significant shift in Nigeria’s security architecture in decades.
In a statement personally signed by him, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the parliamentary approval as “epochal.” He said with State Police now on the table, President Tinubu has shown himself “a champion of true federalism”.
The move, said the governor, is a major victory in the battle against terrorism and other crimes.
The Governor praised the President’s “vision “ and “resilience”, noting that State Police has been central to Tinubu’s reform agenda since his tenure as Governor of Lagos State from 1999–2007.
“Today is a great day for our country — a day to celebrate the triumph of genuine democratic and developmental ideas over parochial sentiments,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“State Police has been top of mind for President Tinubu since 1999 when he governed Lagos. We are happy to witness its emergence in Nigeria, and all thanks to a leader whose life is defined by service to our nation.” Sanwo-Olu said.
He praised the Senate for “making history” and urged the State Assemblies to follow suit and pass the Bill.
RE-CIRCULATING VIDEO OF ARRESTED FULANI MEN WITH ARMS AND AMMUNITION IN IKORODU IS OLD AND MISLEADING
The Lagos State Police Command wishes to state unequivocally that the video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three (3) years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State.
The recirculation of such outdated content as a recent occurrence is misleading, capable of creating unnecessary panic, fear, and apprehension among residents. The Command therefore urges members of the public to disregard the video and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of undermining public confidence and peace.
The Command further warns social media users and content creators against the dissemination of false, unverified, and alarmist stories capable of causing public disorder. Individuals found deliberately spreading misinformation or fake news will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, psc, mnips, has directed sustained and enhanced deployment of Police personnel and operational assets to identified black spots, strategic locations, and all entry and exit points across the State. These proactive security measures are being carried out in close collaboration with other security and safety agencies to ensure the continued safety and security of all residents and visitors in Lagos State. Residents are therefore encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear, as adequate security measures have been emplaced to guarantee the protection of lives and property.
Members of the public are encouraged to partner with the Police and other security agencies by remaining vigilant and providing prompt, credible, and actionable information on suspicious persons, movements, or activities within their communities, as timely information from the public remains invaluable in preventing crime and enhancing public safety.

This is Lagos! I had the great honour today of presenting on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu the prize to WTT Lagos Men’s Singles Champion Dane Anders Lind who defeated Korean Oh Junsung at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere. With me are the legendary Atanda ‘Mansa’ Musa(left) and Sports Commission DG Lekan Fatodu. 21 countries participated in the tournament.
I joined the airport reception for the First Lady yesterday. It was a worthy encounter with our dearest Yeye Asiwaju Senator Oluremi Tinubu OON, CON, who radiates exemplary confidence, remarkable warmth and incredible grace. Somebody has asked me what I was discussing with the First Lady. I threw the question back at him. “What will you say if you have a few seconds with the First Lady?” He was stuck. You?
We hit the streets of Lagos to test how well Lagosians know their state 😅
Can you answer these better than they did? Watch till the end for the cash winners!
Lagos Cracks Down on Unsafe Elevators, Gas Shops as Govt Shifts to Strict Enforcement
The Lagos State Government has moved from advice to enforcement, sealing at least 12 facilities and shutting over 150 illegal gas shops in a renewed push to restore safety standards in Nigeria’s most vibrant city.
The tough stance emerged during the latest _Ask Lagos_ X Space discussion, where the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso and the General Manager of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola represented by his Technical Adviser, @AwojobiSeun described as a “zero maintenance culture” among facility managers despite the availability of world-class technology in Lagos high-rises.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, @gbenga_omo, said the recent wave of building closures was triggered by recurring safety failures, including a fatal lift crash at General Hospital Odan and a Banana Island incident where residents were trapped in an elevator for more than an hour.
“There’s a disconnect between the world-class technology we have in Lagos and the ‘zero’ maintenance culture practiced by facility managers,” Omotoso said. “Many property owners prioritize profit over life safety, viewing maintenance as an optional expense.”
He listed common failures as jerking movements, doors failing to open, and non-functional emergency alarms — all of which he said will no longer be tolerated.
Technical Adviser Mr. Seun Awojobi said the Lagos State Safety Commission has adopted the European N81 safety standard as its regulatory benchmark.
Awojobi said key requirements include mandatory bi-annual inspections by certified regulators and monthly maintenance logs performed by Original Equipment Manufacturers. He added that Automatic Rescue Devices must now be installed to ensure lifts reach the next floor during power outages.
Every elevator must also display a “Certificate of Compliance.” He urged citizens to report buildings without the certificate, stressing that owners must register equipment at https://t.co/SxngYTYUL9. Following a March 31 deadline, the Commission sealed 12 facilities in Lekki and Ikeja for non-compliance.
Awojobi said the Commission now operates under a four-pillar mandate themed the the Four E's which includes Educate, Engage, Evaluate, and Enforce_. The approach includes continuous risk assessment before accidents “crystallize” and legal action, including building closures, to ensure order.
The state is also leading by example. “We have decommissioned all uncertified lifts at the Alausa Secretariat and are currently replacing outdated equipment in General Hospitals,” Awojobi confirmed.
Architect Amun-ra, who joined the call, challenged officials on enforcement integrity, alleging that some developers “pay for express” to obtain safety signs without proper inspections.
The Commission acknowledged the gap, admitting it is “not all-seeing” and explicitly calling for whistleblowing. Once a professional reports a site, he said, the legal burden shifts to the state to act.
Beyond elevators, the space highlighted broader safety threats in the megacity. Over 150 illegal gas decanting shops — where gas is transferred between cylinders — were shut down in three months. The state now permits only certified “Cylinder Exchange” operations in well-ventilated shops.
On emergency response, Awojobi said 25% of Lagos students have been trained in CPR, and no hotel or bar will receive a safety certificate unless at least two staff members are First Aid/CPR certified.
According to him, the state’s rapid response system now integrates LASEMA, the Fire and Rescue Service, and the Command and Control Centre, with a target response time of 15–20 minutes managed through a centralized Alausa tracking system. Citizens were reminded to call 767 or 112 for emergencies, including being trapped in elevators, and 08181002233 for non-emergency safety escalations on weekdays.
WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY 2026: LASG WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT PRESS FREEDOM, DEMOCRATIC ACCOUNTABILITY
The Government of Lagos State has congratulated journalists on the occasion of the Wolrd Press Freedom Day. A free press remains one of the strongest pillars of democracy. The Lagos State Government will continue to support initiatives that promote Press Freedom and Strengthen Democratic Accountability, according to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a message delivered by Information and Strategy Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso.
The theme of this year’s celebration is: "Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security."
"Today presents yet another opportunity for us to deliberate, review our progress over time, and reassess the level of commitment, particularly among key stakeholders, to the true ideals of press freedom," Omotoso quoted the Governor as saying.
The theme aptly underscores the critical role of the media in fostering peace, strengthening institutions, and advancing sustainable development. A free press remains one of the strongest pillars of democracy as it gives voice to the voiceless, holds leaders accountable, and serves as a vital bridge between the government and the people.
"In today’s rapidly evolving information landscape, the responsibility placed on the media has never been more significant.”
He said: "More than ever, the current realities in our country, especially the various reforms being undertaken at different levels of government, make it imperative for members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to remain committed to objective, balanced, and professional reporting that critically examines government policies while ensuring accountability in a fair and unbiased manner."
The Lagos State Government remains committed to promoting transparency, openness, and constructive engagement with the media. “We firmly believe that a well-informed society is fundamental to peace, security, and inclusive development. At the same time, the media must continue to discharge its responsibilities without fear or favour. "
The challenges confronting the media today, including the\ growing threats of misinformation and disinformation, coupled with economic pressures and safety concerns for journalists, and poses significant risks to national stability and development.
"These challenges call for stronger collaboration among government, media practitioners, civil society, and other stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of our information ecosystem. As we approach another electoral cycle in our country, the role of the media becomes even more critical. The press will undoubtedly serve as a key stakeholder in shaping public discourse during the electioneering process. This makes it essential for all actors to uphold the principles of ethical journalism, fairness, and national interest," the Governor said.
He also stressed the need for sustained investment in media literacy, support for ethical journalism, and the creation of an enabling environment where the press can operate freely without undue interference.
" I wish to assure you that the Lagos State Government will continue to support initiatives that promote press freedom, protect journalists, and strengthen democratic accountability,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Lagos, 3 Firms sign PPA to boost energy supply
Lagos State government has signed a Power Purchase Agreement, PPA, with three electricity generating companies to boost energy supply in the state.
The signing agreement was witnessed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House, Marina with the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Abiodun Ogunleye signing for the state government.
While Mainland Power Limited and Akute Independent Power Plant had been operating in the state, Fenchurch was a new partner. They were three out of the four Independent Power Plants, IPP, currently operating in the state.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, @jidesanwoolu urged all the partners to keep to the sanctity of the agreements, exhibit commitment and uphold professionalism to make the projects viable and improve the lives of residents.
“This agreement is about the people and how easily we can solve problems. Let's keep promises from both sides. When people benefit, it makes life easier. This is the beginning of reforms we are seeing in the energy sector,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Abiodun Ogunleye described the agreement as a move to increase power generation and revitalize dormant assets to provide renewal power supply to Lagosians.
He added that the three companies already have a combined generating capacity of 60MW noting that with the agreement, they can scale up to over 200 to 400MW in two or three years without draining the treasury but competing in the market place to provide sustainable energy to our citizens.
Ogunleye further said the Mainland Power Limited which handles Ikeja GRA plant has an installed capacity of up to 8.8MW and a contracted capacity of 5.8MW and serves a wide coverage area stretching from Ikeja to Oshodi providing power to key public infrastructure such as Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, LASURA, and other strategic substations within the state’s power network.
The Commissioner added that the Akute Independent Power Plant now to be handled by Fenchurch Power Limited has contracted capacity of 26MW and is being repositioned as a major energy hub for Lagos State.
Though previously moribund for the past five years, Ogunleye noted that the plant is now being resuscitated through a comprehensive rehabilitation, upgrade, and long-term operational agreement and will provide power to surrounding communities including Adiyan Water Works.
For the Island corridor, the commissioner said the Viathan Engineering which is incharge of the Island Power Limited / Peninsula Integrated Power Project has a combined installed capacity of 21MW, comprising 6MW at Lekki and 15MW at Marina, and will provide power to public infrastructure, including the Lagos State Government House, the deputy governor’s residence, and key health facilities such as Lagos Island General Hospital, Odan, and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital.
The partners commended the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration for setting the pace for Infrastructural development in the country, thereby sending clear signals to investors that Lagos is a viable environment to improve the energy ecosystem.
Sanwo-Olu hails Lagosians on Sanitation Day
The return of the monthly Sanitation Day on Saturday was successful- thanks to Lagosians who trooped out to clean their environment.
From Ikorodu to Badagry, Lagos Island and Lagos Mainland ; Alimoso to Ikeja and Agege, the turnout was impressive.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu would like to put on record the enthusiasm of residents who woke up early to obey the call for a return to a culture that made our state a healthy and clean place for all.
“I thank Lagosians who joined the call to clean up our environment as a sure step to good health,”Mr Sanwo-Olu said.
“That is patriotic; it is the Spirit of Lagos that we often speak about. We should continue to walk that path,” he added.
The governor urged residents to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially now that the rains are coming.
The government has embarked on a massive cleanup of gutters and drainage systems around the state to prevent flooding, following the weatherman’s forecast of heavy rains this year.
The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has joined hands with the Ministry of Information and Strategy to launch a massive campaign against indiscriminate refuse dumping and blocking of drainage systems.
