It’s easy to get hooked up developing gamification programs, superuser programs, trying to build a powerful sense of community, creating onboarding journeys etc. But the biggest bang for your buck is usually improving question visibility

What's the difference between building an audience and building a community?
Building an audience = helping people.
Building a community = helping people help each other.
If you’re just starting to build a community, you’ll need to give it 6-12 months before you start to see business results.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is the results are compounding, and in a few years it’ll surpass everything else.
Them - “we want to grow our community”
Me - “Ok, your data says 70% of your members come via search and 20% via your .com referral, let’s develop plans to invest more in and optimise those acquisition channels"
Them - “No, we’re going to start a podcast!”
Me - 😡
It's still proving devilishly hard to predict which communities will survive and thrive.
But it seems specific dynamics within communities are more important than specific tools.

In the old days, brand communities were primarily about loyalty and advocacy.
Today the best brand communities support the entire marketing cycle.
There's so many great ways a community can support your organisation.

Find the community sweet spot - the point of overlap between:
- What your org needs.
- What members want.
- What a community uniquely offers.
Without all three, you're going to find it a long slog to make the community work.

The purpose of community research is not to come up with new ideas. It is to listen deeply so you can understand another’s perspective, to build rapport, and begin to create trust. Great ideas will come from empathy, trust, and connection.
Starting a community and hoping for engagement to just start happening is like moving to a new city and just hoping that you’ll make new friends.
It won’t happen unless you’re proactive and put yourself out there.
You have to overcome the fear of rejection.

Want to go a bit deeper on the role of #purpose in community development? I'll send you our (@Structure3C's) community planning templates - just message me.

- Salesforce Trailblazer’s
- Notion Pros
- Yelp Elite
