It’s true that the policies under Deng Xiao Ping changed the trajectory of China.
But did socialism make China poor? This personal story was very well written, but let’s look at history for a more likely explanation.
Tomorrow is the PRC’s National Day. The CPC took control of mainland China in 1949, 77 years ago.
From 1840-1912, China suffered one military loss after another, which led to colonial indignation, imperialistic plundering, and territorial annexation.
Civil War followed from 1912-1931, brought upon by dozens of warlords across China.
Then came the fascist, Imperialist Japanese invasion of China that didn’t end until 1945.
After the Japanese surrender, a second Civil War was fought between the US backed KMT vs the Soviet aided CPC. And the rest is history.
Now tell me, was China poor because of socialism or because it went thru over 100 years of war and humiliation?
Granted there were mistakes made from 1949-1978, with the Cultural Revolution as the most severe example. However, it takes time to reconstruct a country, especially one with a billion people.
Mr. Tung Chee-Hwa was a great leader.
Among his many achievements, one that I appreciate the most, is that he brought Disneyland to Hong Kong, ushering in countless tourists for the local economy and generating fond memories for millions of families, mine included.
He was always a proponent of good China-US relations and among many other things, he was a dedicated public servant. Even in his 80s, he was always diligently working to improve relations and encouraging young people to join the effort to bridge cultures and nations.
RIP 🙏🏻
You are partially correct.
Most Chinese people I’ve met are extremely hard working and smart.
The PRC is a socialist country. Ever since Deng Xiaoping the country has been operating under a “socialist system with Chinese characteristics.”
Meaning people work hard, earn a living and get to enjoy the country that is protected by the socialist state.
In China, the government protects its citizens from foreign invaders and domestic criminals.
The government also helps the people who need help by providing them with necessary assistance like basic housing, affordable healthcare, subsidized transportation, groceries and utilities. They try retain as many government jobs as possible, but there are many, many mouths to feed.
Of course, China isn’t perfect but they are trying.
Iran is China’s proxy to wage a war of attrition against the US.
If the US is mired in a quagmire, it’s a win for China.
If the US decisively wins the war against Iran, it’s very bad news for China.
It’s geopolitics 101.
This should not be happening.
China preserves their rare books in four massive cave and underground bunkers.
It’s called The National Archives of Publications and (First) Editions, 中国国家版本馆.
They are spread for further protection.
Chinese believe that cultural preservation is the best way to ensure its continuity and generational inheritance.
🦔AI companies are bulk-buying rare books, scanning them through high-speed machines that cut the spines off, and shredding the originals. A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."
My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."
I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.

@Kanthan2030 Ok, checked. In China no English letter names are permitted since they use Chinese characters.
Citizens are allowed to use the Chinese language name of Muhammad for personal names, which is 穆罕默德.
So, not only is Muhammad not allowed but neither is Donald, Mickey or Goofy.
THE U.S. CAUSED THE COVID PANDEMIC, not China, the U.S. government revealed today.
“It's time the American people learn the real story," spy chief Tulsi Gabbard in a sensation-causing video released on X and a statement on the internet.
And what a story it is.
.
TRUTH AT LAST
The US spent millions to finance a lab in China’s Wuhan to experiment on killer viruses.
The research was on a technique called “gain of function” which some people see as weaponization of the viruses.
That research is “now widely viewed as the source of the unintentional lab leak that sparked the pandemic,” said Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence.
“This dangerous research caused immeasurable harm and countless lost lives,” she added.
.
PREFERRED NARRATIVE
After the pandemic broke out, Washington then worked to tell the world it could not have been a lab leak.
The preferred story circulating at the time was to say that animal-to-human transmission evolved in China due to the circumstances there.
But the evidence tells a different tale, the US spy chief said, releasing a new batch of top secret documents today, her last day in office. "It's time you know the truth," she said.
.
120 BIOLABS
The story begins with the US quietly setting up 120 biological laboratories across more than 30 countries. Some of these laboratories were involved in research on hazardous pathogens, she said.
Dr Anthony Fauci, while serving as head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, sent millions of dollars of US taxpayer cash to be spent on bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, she said.
In 2019, the Covid-19 virus apparently emerged in several locations around the world—but was first formally detected by scientists in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019.
It was soon found all over the world. The “pandemic caused tremendous hardship and pain for millions,” Gabbard said.
.
PREFERRED NARRATIVE
For the US, the preferred story was that it was NOT a lab leak—because the world would realize that the Pentagon was financing biolabs around the world, and at home.
People raising the alarm about the biolabs were accused of “pushing Russian and Chinese disinformation”.
When the existence of the labs could not be denied, the BBC and other media reported that they were “peaceful labs” which were financed for entirely positive reasons—a line that Pentagon-watchers found hard to swallow.
.
LIED ABOUT INTELLIGENCE CONNECTION
Fauci worked with senior intelligence agents in the early days of the pandemic to shape the narrative but lied about it, Gabbard said.
In his testimony before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic in 2024, he was asked under oath whether he had communicated with intelligence agencies concerning viral research before, during or after the pandemic.
Fauci replied: "Not to my knowledge, about COVID."
In January 2025, many people were puzzled when Former President Joe Biden issued “a pre-emptive pardon” to Fauci. Pardons, by definition, are given to people who have broken the law—but this had not happened at that time.
.
TREMENDOUS HARDSHIP
Gabbard is retiring to spend more time with her husband, who has cancer.
But she wanted to get the truth about this subject out there before she disappeared. She says the evidence indicates US-funded research was the root of the problem.
"The COVID-19 pandemic caused tremendous hardship and pain for millions of our fellow Americans and for countless people around the world,” she said.

@elonmusk Thanks for confusing the heck out of millions of generations in the future. They will be wondering how in the world a land based vehicle drove itself into outer space
@OunkaOnX It’s true. Life in China isn’t perfect but most people don’t have to worry about a roof over their heads, affordable food on the table, a job that pays enough to live, convenient low-cost transportation and schools for their kids that can one day allow them to have the same.
