While at @Zealandia this week I was chatting to takahē Orbell for some time (as you do) and wondering where takahē Nio was ... on arrival she did look suspiciously like she'd just woken up and hadn't had time to sort her feathers before joining us.

Not all ducks are created equal. Keep an eye out for pāteke (brown teal) ducklings - this and another were in the wetland at Zealandia @ZEALANDIA this week. Although primarily nocturnal, foraging in waterways and the bush, pāteke are sometimes seen out and about during the day

One newly recognised species is the 'Mount Cook flea', which is almost black and leaps out of the snow when climbers go past! The species in the genus Pharmacus all live in the Southern Alps at high elevation.
